Last night Norway voted to send Gåte to the Eurovision Song Contest - an international and very popular annual show (or even festival) not usually associated with prog rock, to put it mildly. However, Gåte is listed in ProgArchives in the Heavy Prog category.
The song Ulveham, while not prog rock, is both entertaining and powerful. Check it out on Youtube.

It's a show where a lot of times the presentation matters more than the actual song. It's also some generic pop that usually wins. 99% cringe most of the time. ![]() edit: your youtube link does not work Edited by Cristi - February 04 2024 at 04:42 |

Updated now. Forum software bug, I think. I used to feel the same way as you about the show. Lately I've come to appreciate some of the contributions enough to watch it, though - with friends and beer. It's not to be taken too seriously, there is a lot of comedy and self-irony between the lines.

I saw it once, with a friend who asked my opinion of the show. I didn't care for it at all, and have never tried to see it again.

I've never understood why the UK are consistently bad at Eurovision, when this country has produced some of the finest bands and artists of all time.

You'd be surprised how seriously some people take the show.

Some years ago, while working in UK, I've been asked for an opinion about the eurovision that was broadcasted the night before. It was the argument of the day. "Eurowhat?" was my answer. Not that I'm snob, but the last time that I've tried to watch it, I remember a boring show with many pauses and almost no interest from a musical point of view. The last time I've enjoyed it, it was won by Abba with Waterloo

Wow, remind me not to post in this forum again. Instead of enjoying the fact that prog acts appear in large mainstream contests, every single reply has been bitter complaints about the contest itself. No one has even cared to comment the band. What an energy drain this place has become.

As a kid in the UK I was massively into the ESC and always watched it. Probably carried on through my student years but since then less so.
But I do know there have been a few rock acts (even winning it!) and one or two prog acts - Voyager last year and maybe 3 years ago an Icelandic act who were definitely dabbling in some proggish sounds! Even Nightwish tried to get into the contest one year, possibly after the success of the mighty Lordi!😎 So good luck to Gåte👍 |

The link works now, nice song! Vocalist reminds me a bit of Enya.
Best of luck to them! |

...A not so chill Enya. :) It's explosive, perfect song for something like that, and I like it. She has a powerful voice that I would love to hear sing with Courtney Swain of Bent Knee.

Nice. Great vocal performance which takes some skill to pull off live.
Kind of perfect for what it is. I watch Eurovision every year and always end up cheering for the entries that make use if their local music traditions (preferably sung in their native language). Ukraine should have won instead of Italy in 2021: Edited by Saperlipopette! - February 05 2024 at 07:27 |

The result of the Eurovision Song Contest has nothing much to do with talent or the quality of the song. It has much more to do with Politics and International Relations.

Yeah, the judging panel at Eurovision is very often REALLY biased from what I've observed.

It may seem policitally incorrect to say it but the reality is it's a massive party for gay people. I'm not against that in any way shape or form but it has very little to do with promoting decent music. It was fun on occasion to watch when Graham Norton (and before him Terry Wogan) were adding their Irish laconic wit in the commentary but now it's not even got that. I did watch it last year because we had family round and the 'girls' (my Niece and her girlfriend) wanted to watch it. However they decided to retire early and left me, my brother in law and nephew watching it. We ended up cheering for a German band who were actually playing rock music but of course they hardly got any points lol.

When i was a teen during the seventies this contest was very popular in israel.
remember the prog band corny grupa from yugoslavia participating with the song moya generacia - my generation. it was a very unique song among all the pop songs on the contest. also the israeli group kaveret - hive had participated with the song i gave her my life which was proggish
