Passing some time while I'm waiting for something. I was put in mind of this topic yesterday (the overrated album thread) due to a comment on In the Court of the King Crimson having filler (including Epitaph, which I love) and in another topic (the This or That thread) where I shared a couple of Squid tracks and those were checked out and really disliked. I had to acquire the taste for some Squid, even though I like calamari. To each their own tastes.

While covering my usual suspects generally. I thought it might be interesting to see which of these tracks that are known are most disliked at this forum.

To vote you need not know the majority of tracks, you only need to have heard and dislike one track/piece in the list, or have disliked what tracks you know (have heard) from the list. I have made a playlist (see below) in case anyone opts to check out any of the music and to remind oneself if applicable. For some then, choosing least liked might be hard due to all the competition for that spot. :) :P

Art Zoyd - État d'urgence
black midi - Dangerous Liaisons
Brave New World - The End
Bubu - El Viaje de Anabelas
Can - Vitamin C
Cardiacs - Dirty Boy
Coil - Fire of the Mind
Dead Can Dance - The Host of Seraphim
Eskaton - Écoute
Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Osorezan
Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Storm
King Crimson - Epitaph (Including 'March for No Reason' and 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow')
Magma - Naü ektila
Mr. Bungle - Pink Cigarette
North Sea Radio Orchestra - Morpheus Miracle Maker
Pink Floyd - Fearless
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
The Residents - The Festival of Death (both parts)
The Smile - Bending Hectic
Soft Machine - Moon in June
Spirogyra - The Furthest Point
Stereolab - Cybele's Reverie
Swans - Helpless Child
Tortoise - TNT
Van der Graaf Generator - Man-Erg

Nice one. This is a top quality playlist with many favourites of mine, I love all I remembered so I needed to listen into the few candidates that I didn't know or remember. I think I can fairly safely say now that I rate the Mr. Bungle track lowest on the list (although I love a lot of Mr. Bungle).

Nice selection. I know several of these tracks and I do like most of them. This makes the choice rather easy: Epitaph. Not a bad song, but to my ears it sounds way over the top. Off ItCotCK I like Epitaph and the playing with toys on Moonchild less than the other parts of this album.

I like most of the stuff in this list so this is a tricky one. I ended up voting for Tortoise' TNT. I got that album on CD in Chicago on a trip ten years ago and was pretty excited for it but despite trying it many times since then, I don't have even the vaguest concept of what they sound like as a band. I think pretty background post rock if I remember right but whatever Tortoise do they basically left zero impression on me. Too bad because my memory of buying the CD is pretty good, it was a nice trip, but the CD itself is a total miss.

Personally I find Epitaph beautiful. It's Moonchild that is the problem on that album along with an overlong title track that doesn't know when to stop and I Talk To The Wind (snore fest). Overall it's a bit like SEBTP. 2 great tracks and a certain amount of filler but at least the album is a sign post to further great things and was inspirational generally.

Also I like Man-Erg a lot.

Mostly I don't focus on stuff I don't like so ''no vote''.

That was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be--especially when I started seeing how much I love almost every one of the songs on your list. But I've always disliked "Moon in June": no matter how many times I try, I just can't figure out what people see in that song!

A lot of these I love very much; the only song on here which I'm familiar and does absolutely nothing for me is Fearless.

^ "Fearless" was the first Pink Floyd track I connected with when a child.

Thanks to all who took the time to mention their selections and comment on this. To say it's hugely appreciated when people take the time to share their thoughts (if not mean-spirited bu heartfelt) is no exaggeration. I am someone who likes to be physically alone most of the time but does real enjoy interacting with thoughtful people in forums.

I think that for every person it connects with it is going to be somewhat different. A lot comes down to associations we make with the music.I adore it -- it connects with me emotionally. It really resonated with me. I like whimsy and kinds of experimentation. When I first heard Third, Slightly All the Time was the automatic standout. Then it was Out-Bloody-Rageous. Then "Moon in June" really clicked and became part of my DNA. I like quirky, I get a really nostalgic feeling when listening to the song (even though I have only known it for 20 years), it has a warmth to it, the singing and lyrics I enjoy and I like the way the song changes tone. I like its contrasts. I also love Robert Wyatt (Rock Bottom and Matching Mole are so great for me).

As a reviewer you might find it easier to get across what you like and dislike about music, but for me it's hard to get the emotions I feel across and whatever I wrote ends up feeling so superficial. It's one of those that I feel the most profound connection to, but getting somebody to understood how I feel, how it connects and resonated with me, well unless somebody feels something similar I think empathy would be hard. It's very interesting question that needs some soul searching, but each experience is unique to whatever extent. I am not religious, but there is something spiritual one might say in how it connects with me overall. Anyway, it speaks to me in my own own unique way.

"Moon in June" and "Hibou, Anemone and Bear" off second are my favourite actual songs by Soft Machine. Music is so personal, we each react in our own way, make different associations, connect to different personalities, interpret the music with our own unique brains and yet so many of us can and do appreciate the same things of course. And I have spoken to quite a number at PA over the years who did not connect with "Moon in June" at all and at least one more who seemed to question why or how others could enjoy it.

I wonder how you relate to Wyatt's solo music and Matching Mole.

By the way, there's something about Supertramp's "Try Again" off its debut that appeals to me in much the same way, and that is my favourite Supertramp song (it and the debut generally does not get much attention).

I often feel that I can understand why an individual does not like something intellectually, but trying to understand and "feel" what other feel in music is much harder. Maybe one day we will be able to link up and actually feel it, get it, really "grok" it (a favourite word of mine from one of my favourite novels, Stranger in a Strange Land). A big part of me being at PA has been about trying to understand people better, connect more, and share more of myself with people who care and also feel similarly as I always felt like a stranger in a strange land.

Excuse the double-post -- I knew forums before I joined this one where posting twice in a row would get you banned. I could edit....

Nice, you voted for a Third ("Moon in June" off Soft Machine's Third) and could have voted for a third of these. Nice, I like the symmetry.

Not that I would expect you or others to put one together, but I would love to see it. Without you having playlist, I wonder how many of yours I would know? If I knew enough, or listening enough, no doubt I'd find ones to love and ones not to my taste. I have been enjoying your Heavy Prog series, and have seen albums I love in it, but don't know the majority. Please come them coming, they are appreciated. Great to see albums not often referred to.

Once again, Greg, you're showing me how similar our tastes are: I love Supertramp's first two albums--especially "Try Again" and "Surely"); SiaSL is one of my Top Ten favorite novels of all-time (I used to share it with all my girl friends in my 20s) (TMI. Sorry.); and I've always loved both "Slightly, All the Time" and "Out-Bloody-Rageous"). I enjoy most everything of Robert Wyatt's solo career though none of it do I call "among my all-time favorites" but there's nothing much on the two Matching Mole albums that I like other than "O Caroline," "Signed Curtain," and "Starting in the Middle of the Day We Can Drink Our Politics Away."

How do you do with jazz?

I don't connect with Cardiacs, and perhaps predictably they got my vote. I do not care for the vocals in that Bubu-track. But in the context of the full album I don't mind them all that much (but I'm glad Anabelas is mostly instrumental).

That is what I was expecting from you. Cardiacs definitely is not for many people, partially due to the vocals, the theatrics, the shouty nature, also to the circus-like atmosphere, and it's kind of jerky, jumpy GG-like qualities. I had not liked Cardiacs at first, but then I first heard the silly stuff like "Jibber and Twitch." It was "Dirty Boy" off Sing to God that first made me a fan (it is so epic), and Sing to God was my first album. I especially like the period with Sarah Smith and William D. Drake that includes A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window, On Land and in the Sea, Songs for Ships and Irons, and All That Glitters Is a Mares Nest. I really love William D. Drake's contributions and love the albums he released under his own name.

I tried a topic before that I thought might help help get into some songs by artists by bands they don't like, which was cover songs of bands one does not like. Anyway, it did not take off as I thought it would, I thought that was one of my few very good ideas in my time here, maybe partially because lots here don't like checking out music on youtube (and my lack of charisma perhaps). Like one might not like Cardiacs' Dirty Boy but still appreciate these in their own ways:

Brilliant song for me anyway (the lyrics I first found humorous and now icky when I listened and started to interpret). As for that Bubu track, I adore the vocals. So much fun to my ears. I did a poll on that album at one time and I seem to remember that I was the only one who had that as their favourite. I really love it. Different things connect with different people, of course, which is why I wanted to explore this idea with people here. Hoped some might even follow suit with their own takes on this idea. Sometimes exploring what others don't like about music I like can just deepen my appreciation and at other times I start to feel the same as they do as I analyse the music from their perspectives.
