^^ The latest SB album is the best with Nick on vocals. You can certainly get a feel for his voice and how it might work on TSotT from it.

Are the last three SB albums where to go? Since the  two examples I've heard - one of an unplugged album with Neil Morse, as mentioned I had bought - he sounded at best, limited and at worse, painful!
The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS.

True, but I think Kevin's vocals were better, and his vocal work on TSoTT was amazing. There are so many different moods and emotions expressed in the songs as the story progresses and Kevin conveyed them perfectly with his voice.

Something wrong wrt PA's search engine, put in 'Kevin Gilbert' and I have been directed to two threads but not this one??? However, something I added to one of those threads but makes more sense here:

Anybody checked out the tribute concert recording of Shaming of The True, found on the Kevin Gilbert Estates website:
?

Line-up: Nick D'Virgilio (lead vocal, drums), Mike Keneally (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Rick Musallam (guitar, vocals) Bryan Beller (bass), Chris G (drums) and Marc Ziegenhagen (keyboards).

I hate to ask: but after D'Virgilio's major praiseworthy and noble efforts to get Shaming Of The True fully produced and out on disc, is he making a big mistake taking the lead vocals in this performance? One of the most painfully prog vocal recordings I have (now unplayed) in my collection, is of Neil Morse and D'Virgilio  unplugged and singing largely Spocks Beard numbers. Now D'Virgilio  has let loose his vocal chords once again, on what I've come to consider as sacrosanct  music, especially with Gilbert setting the high original standard.  Shaming is a rock opera that deserves major exposure, but IMHO this ain't a good  start to the process.

That album is very dark and dreary.I love it,even though The Kaviar Sessions is quite different than his other work,it's almost an industrial album.

If you liked The Sultan of Brunei you should really try to check out the whole album. The whole album is awesome but the songs "Pretty" and "Making Christy Cry" are incredible.

I recently added his Toy Matinee project under Prog Related, and Atkingani recently added GiraffeClap.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, KC776.

KG is one of my favourite vocalists. It's a shame he didn't get the recognition he deserved. He was also a talented keyboardist. The way he died is a bit disturbing..."only the good die young"...

Thud (with the bonus ep) is available through Amazon.UK, but otherwise bought other of his albums from the Kevin Gilbert Estates website - delivery from California to UK was quick.

He proved to be be a very talented vocalist, as well as a skillful keyboardist (there is an unreleased instrumental track from the NRG sessions that has a strong ELP influence). he is not very known outside of the boundaries of America, but he could have been brought to the ears of a wider audience if he hadn't died of an absurd death just before replacing Phil Collins on vocals in Genesis. It's a pity his earlier works are not featured in PA's database. In fact, NRG IS a prog band (if you doubt about it check out the free mp3s available on KG's official website). Giraffe was a more pop affair, but they had nevertheless some good songs ("the world just gets smaller", "because of you", "last plane out"...). KG turned to something more aggressive after his toy matinee sessions, and I must admit I prefer the tone of his voice in the earlier days of his musical career, even if some mannerism emanates from them, than the more forced voice/spoken words he uses in his latest releases (however, "song for a dead friend" brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it). Most of the people here seem to praise 'the shaming of the true' as the culminating point of his career, and overlook his earlier works. However, I find some true gems among the first phase of his musical activity : the whole NRG sessions, Giraffe was not that bad, some of the songs on the toy matinee project are really amazing (especially the title track) and some unreleased tracks are loaded with a high dose of emotion : "dana rae", "another day", "simpler times", "when strangers part" (the version with KG on vocals). I think his live rendition of CSNY's "suite judy blue eyes" is better than the original. A truly gifted man, who left the world too soon...

This material in the archives sounds a must for release. As a reminder of the Genesis connection, Giraffe have three Genesis covers on the Progfest 94 recording issued by Musea.

Lucas...NRG is here in the archives on Kevin's page.

I would really like to see his other work here.I think Giraffe could be included here, either as part of KG's discography or as a seperate entry, and Toy Matinee could be included in Prog Related. The Kaviar Sessions could also be included in Kevin's discography.

I would really like to see his estate finally release the couple albums of original, unreleased material of his that they say they have.
