Topic: 1st disappointment with PA Posted: December 21 2005 at 12:09 |
...deep purple ? machine head ?
c'mon people...
by placing these non-prog (sorry, "proto-prog"), hard rock elements,
the door is now opened up for just about anything and everything to
appear on a site which is supposedly dedicated to the progressive rock sound both musically & historically.
but on the other hand, there's such a high volume of extremely good examples of outstanding progressive rock...
oh well...

I agree with you on those examples. But also I'm not sure If I think there not prog because I don't like them or not. I always found it hard to find prog in non-liked bands. (Except for clearly prog stuff like ELP, why don't I like them? I've tried!)

Other than the controversy surrounding new "proto" and "prog related" additions, I've not really been disappointed. I love Pragarchives.

...yea... i too really love this site.
i would have never discovered dozens of really great bands had it not been for PA...
but consider this: non-prog visitors, or those who are new to prog
sound schemes and are just now delving into it, might come across this
entry here on the site and imagine that machine head is prog !
they'll go away
thinking, "oh i visited progarchives and they have my favorite cd,
'machine head' on it, wow i didn't know i was into prog...'smoke on the
water' is progressive...cool "

Steve Vai is prog, if only for his collaboration with
Zappa, but there's a lot of progressive elements in
his solo music as well. I'm aware of his hard rock
style, but that doesn't automatically exclude
progressivism.
What's more disappointing about PA is first the
lack of will to include obviously progressive figures
that have had enormous influence on the scene,
often by saying, "Oh that's 'avant-garde'", like with
John Zorn and Fred Frith. Second is more of a
disappointment with the users who hang on a very
narrow definition of progressive, believing it has to
do with following certain cliches set down in the
seventies, and have no historical perspective on the
music and experimentation that lead to its very
possibility...hence the frequent bashing of seminal
works like Fragile, Trespass, Court of the Crimson
King, VDGG etc. But hopefully they can still learn
something, and for that PA is fantastic.

jeez people, can't you just chill out, prog-music isn't the most important thing on earth. Have a happy Christmas.

Ill tell you what. The only thing that actually bothers the crap out of
me with PA is the lack of searching by dates. What if I just wanted to
find all albums from 1978? Hmm..I'd probably be spending a lot of time
here! But seriously, an archive should allow date searches!

I prefer the inclusive nature of the site. When No Doubt and Linkin Park get added, then I'll worry. Actually, I won't worry, I'd be long gone.

narrow definition of progressive, |
it has to
be. i don't believe that "narrow" is being negative. that's
one of the features that characterizes progressive rock...otherwise we
would end up with "broad" definitions & descriptions which will
lead to nothing more than disposable / ephemeral "pop" sounds.

Actually I would hope someone who loves Deep Purple are drawn here and find out about a whole world of music they may have forgotten or missed out on. Works both ways but I would hope this scenario happens more than the one you have.
