recommend me the essentials. I have dabbled in the genre a bit I like Porcupine Tree, Gordian Knot, Estradasphere, Karmakanic, King Crimson and Yes. As well as a lot of prog metal, Sun Caged, Opeth, Symbyosis, Lykathea Aflame etc.

So what should i start off with?

Marillion/Fish, Transatlantic, IQ for the more melonic/symphonic.

Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Queensryche ("Operation Mindcrime") for prog metal.

Check out ProgRock Records: http://www.progrockrecords.com/

They have a good selection and consistently sign new top notch bands.

You're all cracked, the best starter by far is:

Duh.

If you're one of the MILLIONS who have already heard it, I suggest:

YES: Fragile, Close to the Edge

PINK FLOYD: Dark Side (duh), Wish You Were Here, The Wall

GENESIS: Foxtrot

I Suggest:

  1. Genesis: Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot
  2. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here
  3. King Crimson: In the Court of the Crimson King and Starless and the Bible Black
  4. ELP: Brain Salad Surgery and Trilogy
  5. Kansas: Leftoverture and Song for America
  6. Triumvirat: Spartacus and Illusions on a Double Dimple
  7. Yes: Close to the Edge and Relayer
  8. Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. Darwin
  9. Jethro Tull: Thick as a Brick and Songs rom the Wood
  10. Magenta: Revolutions and Seven

Well if you can cope with guitars taking a back seat then the following are essential:

Van Der Graaf Generator

Gentle Giant

Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso    (Be quiet, all of you! I maintain that you haven't seen all prog has to offer until you've experienced at LEAST one Italian album)

and if you can cope with something a bit jazzy...

Caravan and Hatfield & The North

This is of course assuming that you've heard Close to the Edge.

pink floyd definetly.

for prog metal you have to have dream theater. i suggest you get some mp3s on this site from images and words or scenes from a memory and see if you like.

I'd recommend a bit of Arena, "Contagion" perhaps, for the reassurance that excellent prog is still being made today.

I would also recommend 'DarkMatter' and 'Seventh House' by IQ to give you an idea of how old and new prog ideas can be combined brilliantly. DM came out this year, and SH in about 2000.

That's interesting Dick. I can see where you're coming from with your distinction, but I would question for example whether Caravan are "softer" than KC or VDGG. I would however say those two were "harder" to get into, but I don't think that's what you meant!

Did you spot my get-out clause "most of"?

I realise having read many of the enthusiastic reviews for some long term prog bands in Progarchives, which I never got into in a big way,  I've come to a half-formed conclusion that I prefer the heavier and/or jazz complex ends of the (multi-ended) spectrum. However, wrt of original bands listed  - with the exception of one - (i.e. the soft 4), I have several albums by each of them. Hence "half-formed" realisation.............................. A further example: I prefer the original hard edged Renaissance to the softer Annie Haslam band.
