They must hate their past so much. They have had ample opportunity over the years to answer the prayers of thousands of fans the world over, and release a definitive DVD/video that covers their WHOLE career. The best they can come up with is this thing:

I'm a big fan of the old stuff myself - but how many promo
videos did they do with Pete Gabriel? They must be limited to
material.

Thats my point. Yet another lame collection of pop videos, with a few token old tracks like 'Ripples' 'Carpet Crawlers' (not the original) thrown in. For many people under the age of 35, Genesis have probably only been going since 1984.

Why release another video compilation?? Ok, I know..Money. More people want to chuckle their way through 'Land of confusion' than see PG flying around the stage dressed as a flower, singning about God. But surely there must be enough old school fans out there to warrent releasing something more in the true spirit of Genesis. My suggested Genesis package would be:

A three DVD set.

Disc 1: Lengthy concert footage from 1972 to 1974, including a full performance of 'Suppers Ready' and hi-lights from the Lamb tour. Archive interview footage from as far back as possible.

Disc 2: The full 1978 Knebworth concert

Disc 3: Hi-lights from live shows from 1980 - present with a few more upto date videos.

Something for everyone. Looks reasonable to me.

sigod: I'm sure many thousands would embrace something like this.

They would only have to release it once, and I would never ask 'Hit & Run' music to make Genesis face their past ever again  Its not like I'd be asking them to release a new crap DVD every other year, like they currently do.

The story so far:

Three sides live - (Abacab tour) 7/10 has its moments

Mama Live - (Mama Tour) Have not seen, but running order looks predictable (no longer available)

We cant dance - (We cant dance tour) 4/10 - Mostly awful, has a few moments of old school glory though.

Invisible Touch live - (Invisible touch tour) - 2/10 - Appalling track selection. I know for a fact that tracks off Trick of the tail and Wind and wuthering were played at that concert, but they were cut from the vid (apart from Los Endos).I also know they played Suppers Ready on that tour. Instead the video is full of 'Throwing it all away' etc. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Inside Genesis - A load of music boffins, and the lovely Heather Finlay from Mostly Autumn,  critically analysing their music 1975 - 1980. Mostly irritating, but with some teasing clips of them live on the Duke tour.

This is a problem for most of us fans and the bands during that time.  Its one reason why Classic Rock productions is making money selling those "Inside" the Classic Rock Band series altho supposedly the bands consider them bootlegs... there's just not enough live footage from half the bands in the early 70s.  I'm sure ELP is kicking themselves now for hiring someone specifically to go thru the crowds and confiscate any bootleggers booty... Now I bet they wish they had all that film for themselves... Even ABC television claims they accidently erased ELP's performance master from the California Jam....

Then the live footage some do have was enhanced with crappy graphics... for instance the fake lava flowing in Pompeii or Greg Lake as a superhero cartoon on the Pictures DVD....

The early 70s was just not a great time for video... how unfortunate for us!!

THIS IS ELP

FYI I also saw this from the link which I hadn't seen before in case someones interested :

GENESIS - LIVE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM *
Taken from the 4-day sell-out 'Invisible Touch' Tour in July 1987, this is the first time this stunning footage has been available on DVD with 5.1 Surround Sound. 'Live At Wembley Stadium' captures Genesis at the very peak of their career, which spanned a colossal 1974-1998. Always known for their huge production and spectacular stage set-up, Genesis live was a visual as well as aural feast, this, coupled with a set list including tracks such as 'Mama', 'That's All', 'Land Of Confusion' and 'Invisible Touch' makes this 'Genesis - Live At Wembley Stadium' an iconic piece of British musical history. Also includes a Tour Documentary, Photo Library, Tour Programme and 12-Page Booklet. Tracklisting: Mama/Abacab/Domino (Part 1)/Domino (Part 2)/That's All/The Brazilian/Land Of Confusion/Tonight, Tonight, Tonight/Throwing It All Away/Home By The Sea/Invisible Touch/Drum Duet/Los Endos/Turn It On Again (Medley)

I would love a DVD of the Duke tour. That was spectacular for everything -show and music.I'm not as desperate to see PG footage as others are but I would certainly buy it if released.

I saw two concerts on that tour one at a 15,000 seat arena and 1 at a 400 seat club!  That was a great show.  They played The Knife as one of their Encores. It was really fun to see them without the trappings, light show ect.  It made you think of them in a different light.  That club still has a special place in my heart because three years before that I saw Peter Gabriel's first tour with Robert Fripp there.  He encored with Back in NyCity wearing the leather Jacket and all.

As for the Genesis stuff with Peter if it can be restored and remastered to a quality that is listenable I would love to see it.

I'll have to admit the only two Genesis albums I like are the Lamb and Foxtrot. Up to 1975 it was a band plagued with nothing but problems and conflicts. There are so many other important progressive rock bands that have endured. Forget about this band.

Seen it, bought it, watched it, stuck it back on my shelf and forgot about it..

In all fairness the quality of picture and sound is very good throughout, but as havoc points out 'In the cage' is not included in the recording. 'Unquiet slumbers/In that quiet Earth' are also mssing. I heard the concert on the radio at the time and I know they did play these songs. With the exception of Los Endos, its mostly post Duke stuff. When Phil Collins starts singing Blues Brothers songs, and 'Twist and Shout' at the end, you know you're not really watching a Genesis show.

threefates makes a good point about the 70's not being a great or prolific time for video. Very true. With regard to Genesis I am aware that they made a film called 'A band in concert' which I think was made about the time of 'Seconds Out' and I am fairly sure they filmed the 1978 Knebworth show (perhaps some can confirm this??)

I would be surprised if they didn't make a film of the Lamb tour, having gone to so much trouble to make it the spectacle it was. Surely they would have wanted to capture that on film.

'Three sides live' video remains the best live Genesis film to date IMO.

Well, strange you should say this. I attended a music show back in the 80's and saw the rushes of the 'Wembey Gig' on a stand that delt with video editing. There was a clip of 'In the Cage' on a loop. All I remember of it was Mike Rutherford playing a Fender Precision bass and I thought 'Where's his double-neck Shergold? He'll need it for the last haf of the song.' I was never sure why they didn't include it in the Video/DVD.

Unfortunately, I was asked to leave the stand before I could enquire how they got hold of the footage as I was told I was making the place look untidy

This is a post from the admin over at Calprog's Yahoo forum.  This might clear up some things about Lamb film or video.

Hello all,

I thought you might be interested to read the text that Phil Collins
(Genesis drummer turned front man) wrote for the program of "The
Musical Box's" new Lamb tour:

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends and Fans....

Well 30 years has whistled by and we find ourselves on a celebratory
journey back to 1974 to rediscover that ancient work.... "The Lamb
Lies Down On Broadway". I remember it like it was yesterday, the
writing sessions in the rat infested Headley Grange, near
Guildford...Pete in one room with a grand piano with sheathes of
blank paper waiting to be filled with lyrics, every now and then
joining the rest of us as we thrashed through various jams and
unfinished pieces of songs that were floating around. The incredible
day we "wrote" what was to become "The Waiting Room"...then
titled "Evil Jam", improvising wildly through our dictionary of
nastiest noises we could find, and then, when suddenly our "mood"
shifted so did the weather outside, from thunder and pouring rain to
sunshine and rainbows.....I guess you had to be there, but it WAS
very special !!! The recording at a Farm in somewhere in Wales. Us
set up in a barn, with the Island Mobile parked by the pig
sty.....John Burns ever ready with a roll up!!!

Having more material than the time to finish it, we ended up doing 24
hour sessions at Island Basing Street Studios, now Sarm West (home of
Frankie goes to Hollywood and the Band Aid single to name but
several). Racing to finish tracks so we could get it all wrapped up
in time to go to America and play the entire double album before a
bewildered public, who had not heard a note of it as it hadn't been
released yet!!! Now that WAS interesting!!! It also leads me to why
I'm writing this.

The Lamb was never filmed for posterity. There are some very short
patchy videos, very scratchy quality, taken by fans from an audience
P.O.V.... but otherwise nothing to jog your memory,
until now that
is. The Musical Box are a group of artists who have, over the years,
painstakingly recreated various periods of the early Genesis years,
with amazing accuracy and aplomb. In the early days, whenever we were
invited to go to a bar to see a band playing some of our stuff, I was
always amazed at how they actually played it BETTER than we did.
Nowadays there are a few bands out there doing it, but right at the
top of the pile are who you have come to see tonight....The Musical
Box.

I've heard of them for ages, but never gotten around to ACTUALLY see
them. Having done so, I have to say it's an eerie feeling because
they have uncannily captured US BACK THEN in every way. Using the
original back projection slides from our old show, they now have the
advantage of technology unavailable to us back then. We probably only
managed a handful of shows (at most) where everything worked as it
should have done. Tonight, God willing, you'll see the show as it
should and could have been back then if the projector hadn't caught
fire, or if the operator hadn't pressed the wrong button by mistake
and fast forwarded the slides to the next song !!! Hey, this was the
70's remember!!!

Anyway I doff my hat to the lads and their crew....they've picked up
the baton and run with it, and it's there for all to see. Enjoy it.

Phil Collins (the singing drummer)
==================================

Tickets still available to December 1 Whittier show:
http://www.calprog.com
There is only 2 rows left in the center section (BACK), but
wonderfully close side section seats still remain! If you know any
Genesis fans, please forward this to them. They'll THANK YOU.

Jim

Thanks for your post. Not quite what I wanted to hear  but I guess I can stop chasing the dream of a Lamb live vid.

I would also like to retract my opening comment on this thread about Genesis hating their past. That was bit harsh and unfair.

Reading PC's words in Garions post it's clear that he looks back at those days with great fondness and happily supports the Musical Box in what they do. I'd love to see them perform, they must be good if they have the Genesis stamp of approval!

As threefates pointed out, it was the 70's. Filmed live shows were rare. Thanks to the Musical Box we still have a part of the old Genesis.

Yeah me too.   But then it gives importance to The Musical Box to what they are trying to recreate here. Unless Genesis decides to try and recreate it (which is highly unlikely) then this may be our only way of seeing it. I have to say though such high Praise from Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel I am really  excited to go see them in December.
