not absolutely necessary of course... so no..

but  great vocals can make a good song great... and a great song.. out of this world..

something an instrumental can't do...

Not absolutely... I'm thinking about many amazing Camel songs where the guitar or the flute "sings" and many other prog instrumentals that sound perfectly complete as they are.
