Mike Portnoy's 2005 Rush tribute show in Chicago soon available on CD/DVD.
Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy recently issued the following update via his official web site: I am just wrapping up work on the DVD of my Rush tribute show from last year... so in the coming weeks 'Cygnus & The Sea Monsters - One Night In Chicago' will be available on CD and DVD exclusively from the online store here at MikePortnoy.com. Thanks to Ed from Rushisaband for the heads up Edited by Tony R - July 19 2006 at 13:49 |

I had no clue something like this Rush tribute show by DT had been done, but I guess I saw it coming one way or another. Thanks for the news! Hopefully they didn't mess the songs up.

Correction! it's not done by Dream theater it's done by Paul Gilbert, Mike Portnoy, Sean Malone and Jason McMaster. This is hardly Dream Theater. Please Change the title, it is misinforming.

What's the point in paying money for a tribute band DVD? I can see paying to see a live show, but what's the point of recorded material when youcould just buy the real band's stuff (and Rush has a lot of it!). I would think that the novelty of a rush tribute band DVD (even if the musicians are excellent) would wear off quickly.
And yes, I agree, the title should be changed to reflect that this is not DT. |

Just for curiosity sake and nothing to do with the DVd,i add this for your enjoyment.
Dream Theater / Tiles soundcheck Rush jam session: A soundcheck jam session with members of Dream Theater and Tiles during their European Tour in 1999. They jam through several Rush tunes. http://www.rushisaband.com/video.php?id=465 Oh and MajesterX,lighten up for heaven's sake....there is no real need to change the title as I have explained in the opening paragraph what the DVD is about. I didnt think for one minute that the link above related to the DVD. ![]() Edited by Tony R - July 19 2006 at 19:23 |

The problem, mr. YYZed, is this: RUSH live is exactly equal in the studio !!! To watch a DVD by the canadian band is really boring...
![]() ![]() Then, if a tribute band makes different re-works for the songs, and if the musicians are competent guys... well, this could be an interesting thing...

![]() ![]() The difference between Rush Live and Studio is subtle but it is there. Many songs take on a new dynamism and the band do play different versions these days. |

Listen to the studio version of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" and the live version on "All the World's a Stage", and see if your statement holds up. |

Over the years as Rush's music has gotten more complex (in number of simultaneous instruments) their ability to improvise live has proportionally decreased. It is hard for them now not to be slaves to the synths used in the their post 70's material. They still find spots to do some improvisation such as the guitar solo in "Bravado", sections of the drum solo, and the bassline in the middle of "Driven". Now that is not to say it is to the level of improv they used in "Working Man" or "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" of yester years, it is just different.
I'm a big fan of Rush and I have over 380 live shows on CDr. I used to run the Digital Rush Experience back in the day and I have a much different appreciation of the band. I know their live music in incredible detail and there are subtle differences between live and studio. However, I believe you have to be a major fan to really see, know, and understand these differences.
