Ranking Individual album 'Prog-ness'

I really think we need to make the website so that bands are not considered 'prog' as a whole, but rather their individual works are evaluated. Let me make my case:

1) This would resolve a TON of conflicts as far as adding bands go. I've watched the site grow for I guess about 3 years now. It seems like the direction things are going, the best way to please everyone is to evaluate individual albums. How many bands can you think of where the band went through a 'pop' phase and in our eyes 'sold out'. How many other bands can you think of that had a few really original and novel albums, but do not have enough of that in their collection to define them as a prog band. Progressiveness is defined at the album level really. We should adjust for that.

2) You don't have to exclude every non-prog album that the band produces. Collaborators can agree on which albums are prog or individuals can vote on the 'progness' of the album. Albums that aren't considered prog can be listed in grey or something.

3) This resolves the problem of reviewing. Reviewing should be about how much people actually like an album. The progginess of an album doesn't necessarily correspond to the amount of enjoyment that people get from an album. This way there would be no mistake about what a review means. If a person reviews an album well, it means they like it...the way it should be. A separate rating can be assigned to how much the person perceives the album as being progressive.

I know this seems like a lot of work, but I think it's ultimately the best way to go. I'm sure a lot of people would agree. Especially since this gives everyone a chance to discuss albums from a band that maybe only produces 1 prog album. Also, it alleviates the fear that a band who starts off with one prog album will sell out on the next album and all of the following albums...Thus making them a band that should be excluded from the cite. Whereas older bands that started off prog are at a disadvantage for inclusion.



I would really like a serious discussion about this because I think it is a very important step that the archives should consider, and I'm sure many others feel the same way.

Well, I agree with your idea. Albums are written to be progressive (I'm not so sure about going down to the track level, but hey, it's thorough). Everything should be evaluated on the album level instead of the band level. It just solves so many inconsistancies.
