Does anyone out there know a (mainly non-vocal) prog symphony which is just as powerful as 'The Gates of Delirium' (on Yes' RELAYER album)?

I am not looking for masterpieces that are mainly vocal, such as 'Close to the Edge' or 'Supper's Ready'. I am just wondering if there are other symphonic pieces, approximately 20 minutes long, that pack a real punch. Pink Floyd's 'Echoes' comes close, but it seems a little too mellow. 'Lark's Tongues in Aspic', 'Ommadawn' and Caravan's 'Nine Feet Underground' might fit the bill, but they don't have meaningful lyrics... (Erm, I hope you're prepared to call Jon Anderson's lyrics 'meaningful')

Any recommendations???

    Yeah, try Renaissance. Song for All Seasons or Mother Russia. Well, Ashes Are Burning would do the trick too I guess, but I recommend those two first. Ok, they're not 30 minutes, but they don't have to be

No, it isn't. But "Meurglys III" (from World Record, VdGG) contains much more instrumental sections than instrumental-vocalic ones.

Uhhh...they're not mainly instrumental...but obviously the first half of TFTO by Yes just wins.

I second the VdGG reccomends.

Hamburger Concerto isn't really "delirious" but it is quite good.

Soft Machine's Third is 3/4's instrumental and 5/4's brilliant.

fuxi-- love your avatar. Of course 'Tarkus' is a must. Happy the Man's 'Death's Crown' (Cuneiform), Bo Hansson's 'Lord of the Rings' (One Way) and Eccentric Orbit's 'Attack of the Martians' is fun and a great CD (eoband.com).

No, Renaissance usually have only acoustic guitars, but they have superb acoustic guitars along with great keyboards and bass (sounding somewhat like Chris Squire), There are the vocal talents of Annie Haslam (5th octave range!) and great orchestral arrangements.
If you are into Yes, Genesis, etc, you will surely find them interesting.

A song that doesn't have much vocal on it, that has 16 minutes and has great electric guitar solos is Salisbury, from Uriah Heep.

How about "Space Truckin' " from Deep Purple's "Made In Japan"?  I would say that comes very close to being a "delerious" instrumental - well worth the listen regardless. Smile

I must have been delirious to mention it, or maybe it's just that I have hamburger for brains.  It's a little crazy in parts, but not in a "Gates of Delirium" sort of way.  This might seem a touch blasphemous (as it's recognised as such a great Prog piece) but I'm not that keen on "GoD" to tell the truth. 

Mahavishnu Orchestra has some of the same delirious qualities, I feel, but the songs I'm most familiar with of theirs are shorter.  "Hymn to Hymn"... hmm. And Magma's "MDK" has some of those qualities, but not that appropriate I guess.....
