 Topic: The Gift: how much neo-prog are they?

The Gift have just released their debut and was added to PA as symphonic prog. However, it bothers me is that they have been associated with neo-prog in a review by Erik Neuteboom. I'm considering buying the album, but will be grossly dissappointed by any obvious neo-prog influences.
Can anyone describe their degree of neo-progressiveness?

I'm sure this neo-prog you mention would be a bad thing if it actually existed (just try and make sense of the definition here on PA).
Here's a novel thought: why not just listen to the music and judge it without any preconceptions or labels. You might find more music you like.

Just Google: "The Gift Awake & Dreaming" and you will find a lot of reviews, it's up to you to trace the mentioning of neo-prog

No novelty here. Tried it and found neo-prog is not for me. Neo-prog is very much alive if you ask me. There's so much better music to spend my dollar on out there.

Here's an idea. Maybe describe what you consider to be "neo prog" then see if the bands mentioned sound like what people hear on the Gifts album. It seems to me that people love to bash neo prog but those same people fail to try to define what exactly neo prog is.

I have the album and love it. It clearly does come under the general banner 'neo-prog' but that does not detract from the album in any way. The music is superb and even more so for being the bands debut. I am 48 by the way, and still find new prog satisfying.

I got an e-mail from The Gift that they were very pleased with my review and I am very pleased with Daysbetween his post because it's more important that the progheads love the music rather than the endless discussions about the genres

every prog after '80 is automaticly neo-prog.
that out of the way, The Gift are marvelous
but still it is neo-prog, if you want to call it symphonic prog be my guest, doesn't lesson the musical experience.

here!here! I agree with you totally! enjoyment of our beloved prog is SO subjective....Is there clarification of the grey areas distinguishing symphonic and neo? (oopps  ) an unintended topic modification ( sorry) love "the gift" BYW....
