I was listening to a Tony Banks album named STILL today and it's a pretty good album, but
it's about 90% pop music with about 10% prog elements thrown in. So since everyone is coming
up with new names to describe musical styles, I thought you could call it "PROP".
Popular music with some intelligence behind it! WHAT AN IDEA!
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

Thanks for the input, but I think we already have enough genres, sub-genres, proto- this and post that, to make the waters muddy enough. More junk in the mail box does not make for better reading. Edited by Witchwoodhermit - January 10 2007 at 23:25 |

That's why we have prog related. We have also discussed prog pop many times.

Oh shucks...
When I saw the name PROP on the threads heading, I thought you meant the band PROP, an australian band/project (unsure of which) that released an amazing album called "small craft, rough sea" a few years ago. They rely quite a bit on the use of vibraphones to assist with the melody. The album is quite progressive in its structure (although an instrumental, it tends to tell a story). Am unaware of any further releases from the band, except for a various artists release where the tracks from "small craft rough sea" are remixed (entitled "cook cut damage destroy")
The website is http://www.prop.com.au/ . Its pretty spartan,
Enjoy

I really like this jacket, but the sleeves are much too long.

i like that album! thank you for name-dropping it – it has some concise,
refereshingly non-dumb pop songs with some prog flavour. tony banks' unmistakeable keyboard-style prevails throughout. just for the record – the album features guest vocal spots by nik kershaw, andy taylor (NOT the guy from duran duran), jayne klimek (was also on TB's previous "bankstatement" project) and none other than fish. his turn on the 9minute+ "another murder of a day" is quite stunning. banks also sings one song, "hero for an hour", which has a distinct "a trick of the tail" vibe to it. if you can, give it a spin, you may just find something you enjoy. |

"Still" is the CD that introduced me to Fish, which then introduced me to Marillion, which then led me to a search for more prog I didn't know existed. You could say this album is directly responsible for my obsession with prog to this day. I thought it died in the late 70's. Thanks Tony! Terry
