Never mind all those keyboard geeks and axe heroes and White vs. Bruford face-offs - let's have a proper prog poll.

Lindsay Cooper every time!

Bassoon must surely be set to make a return to the centre stage of prog, in the same way it is gonna storm American Idol.

Ooh.. not many choices but this is still a toughie! I think I'm gonna have to go for Gulland though - listen to his work on RQTG3 and Raindance... man, he can make a krummhorn ROCK!

Great poll!

Berckmans made his bassoon assume a more prominent role in his band's global sound than the other (brilliant) contenders - my vote went to him.

Personally, I suspect that most of my fellows have voted for the bands and not specifically for the bassoonists themselves.

When I set this poll up I went for Lindsay Cooper, on the grounds that she's a superb player and was an integral part of Henry Cow. However, it has since struck me that both Gulland and Cooper, whilst still musically active, no longer work in the field of progressive rock. Berckmans is still working with Univers Zero, and I also take Cesar Inca's point about Berckmans pivotal role in Univers Zero.

One reason why I love this forum is that there aren't many other places where you could have this debate.

While researching for the Daniel Denis bio, I discovered that when he's not playing with UZ Berckmans writes music for the theatre and is also a comedian - the mind fairly boggles! It's on the Univers Zero website.

On a sadder note, I heard that Lindsay Cooper retired from live performance a couple of years ago because of multiple sclerosis.

This is where you can see where English bands have an unfair advantage over a Belgian one. As there are many more Britsh..... I'm surprised that Berckmans got cited at all.......

A Belgian sort of chauvinism here.
