I just think Mike is an extremely underrated guitarist and I'm just curious to see what people have to say.

Probably he is not terrible but it's almost impossible dare comparing his work with Hackett. Personally I dislaike almost all his solos with the exception of Duke's Travel which by any means is wonderful!!!!

well if you think that and it makes you happy thinking that then who am I to suggest otherwise  ,but if I was to suggest otherwise  say in a parallel universe  hypotheticaly speaking,  I would perhaps say that steve hackett is a wonderful guitarist and let you read between the lines Tongue

To understand his inspiration on Duke, you have to listen to - and appreciate - his first solo effort, Smallcreep's Day (1979).  The sixth track, Out Into the Daylight, is the quintessential proof that Rutherford had learned something under the tutelage of Hackett; the part of the guitar solo 3/5 into the song has Hackett-inspiration written all over it.  Simon Phillips drum work on that song is some of his best too - gotta love that double-bass work.  The inspiration no doubt for the Portnoys and the Manginis of today...

^Spot on. I think Rutherford's best ever solo is undoubtedly the stunning instrumental 'Out Into The Daylight' from 'Smallcreep's Day'. The segue from that track into 'At The End Of The Day' and beyond is as good as anything Genesis ever recorded, imho. Actually, 'Smallcreep's Day' is the album 'Duke' could have turned out as, because 'Duke' was also initially planned to have a six song suite called 'Duke Suite' with Behind The Lines/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Turn It On Again/Duke's Travels/Duke's End.

Sorry I just wanted to keep it about Genesis as I only have Smallcreep's day and a couple Mike and the Mechanics for his solo repertoire.

^Well, there's not much else apart from that from Mike. His other solo album, 'Acting Very Strange' is out of print and is far from popular amongst anybody, that I've encountered on these forums, and of course Mike and the Mechanics is AOR verging on adult contemporary.

What are you talking about?  I never brought Hackett into this poll.  This is about Mike.  And for the record, Steve's my favorite guitarist so I don't need to be reminded of his work. No offense.Wink

well my point was I heard less than half of his solo material so I didn't want to focus on it.  I probably should have thrown Into the Daylight, it is one of his greater ones.  That and Working in Line should have been posted.  I just thought it would be weird by itself.  Fabulous album btw.  The best Genesis solo album of the three members left imo.

Wheres fountain of salmalcis?  thats rutherfords only real solo. besides every song you put down is bad in my opinion, except mama thats passable.

But Mike is good, and extremely underrated.
 
He plays his own style, and plays some very personal sounds.

First of all, Mike is not a virtuoso...that's why I like him a lot!
I think the haunting, disturbing solo on Mama is the one I like the most!
