Am I allowed to say I don`t like tool ?  may I do so without any bitter outrage or nasty retorts ?  I believe there should be a thread  where we are free to talk about  what  we don't like,  just as we can talk about what we do like.
Can I say I don't like Tool ? well honestly I tried to get into them but something in their sound didn`t gel with me.. before you say give them more time I feel I have allocated enough time to them and I just can't see what all the fuss is about ?  maybe I have bad taste in music,  but when I listen to music I`m listening for a solo or a sonic sound scape, I  am hoping to find a melting pot of ideas from serenity to fusion from sweet poetry to bitter aggression with even beligerance and malice..   anything that I can describe as art,  anything that lives in my soul that music itself holds the key to release it   .. but Tool don`t live in my soul  they live on the shelves at K mart and are worn on T shirts by drop out high school students with pins through their noses. They live in other peoples souls not my own  ...

I just don`t like Tool   .. Ahhh  thats better, I feel better now ...  thanks for allowing me to spit out the vile that's been force fed from the prog committee  for ages now,  and thanks for allowing me the freewill to say what I feel.

Please  comment on what you think that bugs you  about whatever it is? what is it you need to purge from your system  here is a good place to let those feelings out . Tongue

I'm not a Tool fan either, LH. The darker side of progressive music just doesn't interest me unless the band showcases a lot of melodic qualities (i.e. Riverside; Pain Of Salvation).

You can say that you don't like Tool...but I don't see the point of making a thread to do so.

Yes, but, in any thread, it is assumed we would discuss what the original poster has said. Whereas you specifically said you don't want us to discuss what you said. Since you said that, there seems to be very little point to this thread.

What is the point anyway? To "comment on what you think that bugs you  about whatever it is?" In that case, this belongs in the Discussion Not Related to Music section, since it is not specifically addressing music (prog or non-prog) ... and we already have a Rant thread there.

I think what I`m fishing for is what you don`t like..  no point in just rehashing or flogging to death one theme...  besides  this thread wont last if we only single out Tool  ...  must be other bands or things that bug people about  prog/related stuff

Its a thread where you can say what you like within the restraints of the Forum rules
To Keep this thread going there's only one rule that is don`t abuse anybody for their point of view   ...  don`t know if this has been tried before   .. lets see how it goes

Feel free to discus what has been said ... there's a difference between  talking about certain points indirectly and  directly abusing somebody for their  point of view...  just keep it civil thats what I meant to say Smile

Yeah I don't really like them either. I think it's the production side of it that turns me off, the guitar tone or something..

Do not abuse anybody in this thread just state your case and go placidly my friends Smile

Of course you can, and you're not alone. I could never get into them for some reason. I'm not a big fan of Maynard's vocals, and their sound seems a little underwhelming to me.

To say you don't like Tool is fine, but to insult their music and fans in the same thread, you have to expect some retribution. I like Tool, but I don't really feel they even belong on this website, along with alot of other bands that are labeled as prog(Muse,Radiohead,Led Zeppelin,etc...). There are thin-skinned people on this website who take music and themselves way to seriously. I learned that early on when I insulted someone for creating yet another thread cryingCry about Opeth's death metal lyrics.

For an interesting interview with Tool lead singer MJK and his feelings on his fans, here the link;  http://www.avclub.com/content/node/55757/1
What is prog rock ?

It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential.

I adore TOOL - the best and one of the most influental bands from Modern Prog bands along with Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta.

What I've heard of them seems OK - but nowhere near as progressive as the reviews I've read imply (read: overtly proclaim!).

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

I didnt have any problem with your opinion, its simply a matter of taste until i saw this comment. i wont comment on that. i hope you understand how wrong is it. Being so preconceived and unfair..

I wouldn't normally reply to these types of posts because people have different tastes but the above statement really got under my skin. I am a 46 year old Physicist, have my own company, married with 2 sons (none of us have any tatoos or pins through any part of our body) and Tool lives in our souls. Just this weekend I was going through my CD collection listening to a track from Rush, Indukti, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Genesis, Yes, Dream Theater and then I listened to the Grudge. It was at this point that I thought "You know, all those bands are good but Tool is on another plane. They add another dimension to music (I call it texture) that the other bands don't have." I am not saying that they are better than other bands but, for me, they resonate with a part of my soul that the other bands can't touch.
