Prefer the maestro clarinetist of  jazz Benny Goodman - if you would like to investigate 30's jazz live, check out  the marvellous double CD set Live at A Carnegie Hall 1938 - and ask how they managed to recorded 15 minutes tracks back then! What I marvel at is that some the jazz improv heard from the period, I would otherwise swear was something that shouldn't predate the 70's.
 
Well Benny Goodman was one of the first "clarinet heroes";  for me there's no comparison, both are good in their own time.

Strangest group I've ever heard.  At one time they sound so reminiscent of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.  With all the tightness and dynamics in place.  The next they sound like a beer bar band on Friday night jamming.  Weird, but good.

Their 3 Live, separately issued  albums are certainly worth getting. But "weird": perhaps compared to RTF's RW,  but  I would place them musically round about the middle of modern jazz rock fusion.
 
Now listening to Michael Brecker's The Pilgrimage - powerful blowing from a man who knew this was his swansong. Metheny Mehldau, Patitucci and De Johnette, give this album an allstar cast.

I've started John McLaughlin, integrally.

I really liked Devotion, it has really acid parts and guitar hackles, very good for the time's sensation.

hey guys, can anyone tell me how Stromboli fit the jazz-rock/fusion genre? I've just listened to their second album and, besides the fact that I don't like the music (read mee review), I found mainstream rock, eclectic vocals and small pop-art in their attitude. Don't know the debut double album, but it couldn't be that changed, right?
