I'll answer my own question: not jazz rock fusion nor any of the new variants.A band that samples musical styles from a very broad area, (even Chinese on this!), and while you get a bar or two of a jazz instrumental often buried in the mix. A band, from the evidence of this album, which don't drop into the JR category.

In the meanwhile currently listening to Thieves Kitchen's Shibboleth. Now here's a band that demonstrates far more of a jazz rock thing, although they haven't completely forgotten they also enjoy playing mainstream prog. A band who could evolve further into a really interesting vocal based fusion group.

Not a jazz artist, but this album might appeal to jazz enthusiasts, not only because of the presence of Chick Corea, but also because one or two of the track here venture into jazz, one more mildly and the other more straightforward

Yes, a flamenco one!, the title track is a full-fledge flamenco jazz piece with interesting improv. section provided by guitar, piano and what sounds like a greek bouzouki (I don't know if it is in fact)... great album.

Tal Wilkenfeld: Transformation
Wayne Krantz guests on this young Aussie lady's (18!!) first solo album:

Also got Spiral Architecture as recommended in the jazz metal thread - only been able to check out the first two tracks but I have to ask: how long should I wait  for the jazz elements to kick in?

Casiopea
Japenese jazz/fusion band.  Just stumbled upon them the other night by chance on youtube.  These guys are badass.  There are probably many other jazz-fusion outfits listed on PA similar to these guys.  Bassist Tetsuo Sakurai, guitarist Issei Noro, and drummer Akira Jimbo have as much talent as many of the regular names mentioned on this forum.  Personally, I think they are as good, if not better than Chick Corea's Electrik Band.  Musicianship is almost on par with the Return to Forever boys.  Highly recommended.

I'm listening to music from this site:

and it's a treasure beyond treasures. For instance, I've just become acquainted with the brilliant reedist Bert Wilson thanks to that site.
