These are two bands I love a lot, but I never really consider radiohead to be artrock and primus as only prog related. I'm sure the same argument could be made for the flaming lips...but that is altogether different. My question is...
Which band do you think fits better under the ineffible definiton of progressive rock?

Les Claypool, now there is a man who can play his insturment, and all the new things they tried... in my mind they are prog, radiohead is too but not nearly as much.

Radiohead without a doubt... the answer is the same as it's always been .. prog is music that is art.. Claypool does plays the HELL out of his instrument on Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. If that alternative stuff is prog.. then I'm resigning my SC position (though I've already tried once hahahha) And though seeing Primus on the Letterman show perform the songs dressed in animal costumes brought back memories of the shear ridiculousness of Gabriel-era Genesis. That simply doesn't cut it Radiohead are serioius artists creating serious music. That's enough for me |

But a song such as just is amazingly proggy? I think you may have to look deeper than just Wynona's Big Beaver.

While I do think that Radiohead blows Primus out of the water in terms of the revered "Proginess", Claypools solo work is much more than Radio Head. Listen to FFFB.

I'll give you that... I like his various projects outside of Primus... in terms of 'proginess'. |

As do I.
Primus if mainly for fun, kicks and giggles. Some interesting moments, and I do enjoy them, but his solo work is much, much better.

Ok, Primus is a bit tough to listen to at times (esp. as background music when you're trying to do something else) but dang, there is no bass-player like Les Claypool. Talk about innovation and technique. All three are "progressive" in the truest sense of the word, exploring their instruments into areas where "no man has gone before."

Radiohead.
I can't stand Primus, I've seen them live a couple of times and couldn't detect anything prog (or musical).

Primus is the most proggy of those two, IMO.

I think Radiohead. Both are great bands, but Primus tends to embrace the metal/funk side of things rather than progressive elements other than outstanding musicianship.
