Topic: Tool ... rate their musicianship ? Posted: May 30 2007 at 21:54 |
it is a tough field out there, there are prog bands who are pretty amazing at what they do and the level though play at .

Very good, especially with polyrhythms, but they don't flaunt their musicianship, so it's hard to gauge how ell they can play. Despite that, VERY good.

Well , they seem to be in tune. That's usually a good thing.

excellent without being flashy. The only thing they flaunt is innovation.

It´s though indeed... Jones might not be the world greatest guitarist, Chancellor is quite good and easily recognizable yet I think he might be a little limited... while Carey is beyond excellent... he is like the "most excellentest" of them all... so I would say very good. Jones can probably play some great solos and stuff, but he doesnt, he keeps it rather simple ...on the surface, but rhymically, the man can play!

Carey is amazing, Keenan is good, the guitar player (is it Chancellor?) I think is just OK, as is nthe bassist. But the whole band, as a whole, leaves a dry feeling in my mind and heart... Their music is as cold as it gets, with the exception maybe of "Discipline" by KC. Their moments of noise get in my nerves, and I'd say they ARE actually a little flashy and show-off... Just another style of show-off, but still show-off, specially Carey, who just can't stand still for too long. Don't get me wrong, I respect the band and like a few of their songs, but, in general, I have problems with them, specially with AENIMA. Lateralus is better, as is 10.000 days, more music, less noise. Yes, that's actually what happens: AENIMA has clouded my vision. Tool can be actually good! As AENIMA was the last album I heard from them, it almost erased the good moments that the other two left me with... I guess I will have me some Tool tonight, because I really need to remember their good stuff, not their noisy, nu stuff.

the Discipline connection makes sense considering that album had a huge impact on their sound. Listen to the middle part of "Wings for Marie" and then "Indiscipline", and then "The Sheltering Sky" and then "Reflection"...also I agree, AEnima's a decent album, but way behind the 2 after it

Their musicianship is excellent. They excell in areas that are ignored (for some reason) in western culture. We tend to base virtuosity and greatness on how fast one can play or basically lead which is stupid. Many other cultures use rhythm, texture, and so on as a basis for greatness which should be used in all cultures. Unfortunately we suck. Tool doesn't though. Woo!

No heart? Cold? Holy sh*t! Also I don't understand the whole "nu stuff'. Seeing that Aenema is over a decade old and the albums you like are the "nu stuff".

I`m not sure we will ever escape the fanboy "thing" that goes on in the poll results with such bands like Tool , just once it would be nice if we could all be objective.

60%! =P
I know they have rhythm mastered but I've never heard them in uncomfortable territory.
