Love TOOL but mike is incomparable this days. The best Progressive rock drummer of today.
The Neil Peart of today.

I think you picked two drummers that, while they're both great in their own rights, are over-anticipated here in the sense that better drummers are located all over the world. Possibly in groups you'll never hear about, or just ones that won't be found on this website. I voted for Mike.

Neil Peart of today? Wow. I wouldn't say that with Neil around. Wink

Carey.   Love 'em both.  Mike's got chops over Danny, but Danny has a very refined, unique style, whereas Portnoy seems easier to be label a particular style (metal).

Plus if you'd like to get into the big kit vs small kit debate, I much more respect and like what can be done on a smaller kit (ie Danny Carey).  You never saw buddy rich playing a 15+ piece in order to draw attention.

Mike, cause he's just more varied, even though both are no Virgil Donati or Thomas Lang.

Danny Carey gets my vote this time. He is more refined. Mike Pornoy has a tendency to overload the songs which makes him sometimes a little annoying.

Both of them are really talented drummers. But I'll pick Danny Carey

Danny, I like his style more, and he has a better looking kit.

I wouldn't say that. I have played for 12 years and Danny Carey is nothing all that great. Neither is Mike, but he is better.

I will always consider drummers like Che or Zach Hill miles ahead of these guys but they aren't bad...per se.

I have played drums a long time and I think everything Danny Carey does Mike Portnoy could do with ease but everything Mike Portnoy does I doubt Danny Carey could handle.

Carey is good , real good but certainly no Portnoy , If Portnoy was playing in Tool he would all of a sudden become less complex and more refined this is a poll about drummers not bands try to remember that Smile

Carey, after Bruford my favorite drummer. As for those that say Portnoy could play everything Carey does easily (which might be true anyways)... so? Does that really care? Carey has developed a very unique drumming, be it more or less complex than Portnoys, I prefer him for his creativity, not only his technic!
"You want me to play what, Robert?"

really? Actually Mike is better than Neil these days!!!
Neil had been playing the same dumb ass solo sinse the power window tour.!!
Neil is good but not great anymore he so boring these days.

If i didn't much about drumming ( I am a drummer) I wouldn't say that because that it would make me ass because I was going to territories that I am not familiar at all.
Mike the busiest drummer of the prog/rock world these days.
Everybody want he on their albums  form pure progger to prog-metals solo artist.
He reminds me of Buford after his departure  in the 70's King Crimson.
He toured and played with:
Gong, National health, Genesis, UK,  Roy Harper his solo fusion band and other.!!!

Mike is doing exactly the same thing!!

Niel and Danny aren't even close to that archivemt or maybe never will!!!!Clap

Mike may be very skilled at his instrument, but Danny Carey has a more enjoyable and creative style. Danny Carey for me.

Danny Carey, his drumming is so much more appealing to me.

Portnoy's "I never met a fill I didn't like" style of playing gets old after awhile.
