The Wake is a good album, but I think Dead Winter Dead is more impressive, with a good storyline, great harmonic singling and excellent symphonic touches. It also spawned the formation of the TSO, (which some may see as a bad-thing)

exactly
the way i see it is that if it wasn't for DWD there would be no TSO nor Wake of Magellan...
while "Wake of ..." is a great album it has some weaker moments that interrupt the course of the album, the thing that you can’t find while listening to DWD

Both very good albums but DWD just has that bit more atmosphere - so that's my vote

Dead Winter Dead (and not just because I live in an area tht snows 10 months out of the year). Its darker, more centered and a little more romantic (I mean that in the old definition). A lot of bands can learn from these two albums on how to craft songs that are emotionaly relevant and meaningfull, something that a lot of prog has trouble with.
