all of them are fine musicians, esp. jan akkerman (focus)
but i personally have no use whatsoever for any of these.
progressive rock and rural tranquility don't match. true or false?

I went for Trace, but I love all 3.

I would have included Solution as well, possibly my favourite Dutch band. I also feel that Golden Earring are close enough to prog to get in these archives. Songs like Vanilla Queen are very progressive.

Saw Focus with Return To Forever live in Montreal in 1973 and Ekseption with Maneige opening in 74. No trace of Trace live anywhere. But Akkerman and crew rule the dutch proggy seas, in my humble yet seasoned opinion.

Only ever heard Focus. In fact actually saw Focus in concert in the CAFE at university in Melbourne. One of the few prog groups that made it to Australia.Smile
Allomerus. Music with progressive intent.

Had you included Finch.... I might have hesitated a secoind then still voted Focus

Never tried out Trace yet. I like both Focus and Ekseption, but I prefer Focus. I think they're one of the best prog bands ever. Still, I need to listen to more of Rick van der Linden's output. Did you know that the director of the London Symphony Orchestra actually thought that Rick was even a more professional musician than Keith Emerson?

A few years ago I did some interviews with Japanese progrock bands like Gerard and Ars Nova, I was stunned by the fact that they mentioned Rick van der Linden as their keyboard hero at the same level of Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman so my vote goes to Trace, check out their eponymous debut CD, one of the highlights of Dutch progrock history Clap

As much as I want to give Trace more votes, I have to go with Focus, true Dutch masters.

Post Script: Prompted by this thread, I went off in search for more Trace and Ekseption releases. During the search I discovered that Rick Van Der Linden died 18 months ago. Man, that's tragic. Rest In Peace Rick - your music lives on. Cry
