One of the best. I remember playing Birdland in my high school band class, been a fan ever since. He will certainly be remembered and continue being influencial far into the future.

Well, I'll remember his eyes, full of love and beauty, and the joy of his music. A great musician who lived through very rough times and had the chance to live a great life after that. He looked like a happy man to me (saw him only on video).

One of my treasured mementos of Joe Zawinul, is a jingle he graciously did for my radio show - I will definitely play it more more time in respective and memory of the great man, when we dedicate a programme to his music.

Agreed.  He made a huge contribution to music during the late-60's/early-70's, and forward.  I had the good fortune of seeing Weather Report in a small club in the mid-seventies -- I was literally sitting about 10 feet from Zawinul -- and it's one of those concerts I'll always remember.  People often overlook that he was one of the synth (ARP 2600) pioneers.

Yeah, it's just too sad for words. How many more apples are going to fall from the tree this year? It just doesn't bear thinking about.
Looking still the same after all these years...

An incredible musician.  Helped spawn Jazz/rock fusion. Wrote the hit "Mercy Mercy Mercy" for Cannonball Adderley.  Kicked major ass with Miles Davis, Weather Report and his own Zawinul Syndicate.  A very sad loss for the music world.  If you don't know Joe go buy some of his recordings now.  He was amazing.

One of the fusion pioneers, great Joe Zawinul died in Wienna. Watching him live with Weather report and Zawinul sindicate was fantastic expirience for me.

I just heard the sad news that Joe Zawinul passed away today at the age of 75. I'll never forget how much of a life changing event it was when I first heard In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, two landmark albums he recorded with Miles Davis. It was with Miles where Joe helped invent this incredible art form known as Jazz Fusion. Joe went on to make more magical music with Weather Report shortly thereafter, where came more landmark albums such as Heavy Weather. His song "Birdland" earned Grammy awards for 3 different recording artists: Weather Report, Manhattan Transfer, and Quincy Jones. He will be greatly missed.
Thanks for the picture of Joe playing the Korg Prophecy, figures he'd like a cool synth like that. Check out Great Expectations or Lonely Fire from Miles Davis's "Big Fun" for some really deep Zawinul/Miles creations.

Herbie Hancock made a nice statement about this.
“Joe Zawinul is one of my oldest friends in the music business. He was a force as a composer and an amazing conceptualizer. He opened up a doorway between jazz and rock n’ roll and was a major influence on Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and me. The world has never been the same since he made his contribution to our society.”

We will miss you Joe. Thanks for all of the amazing music.

Oh, this is a sad loss indeed.

In pace, requiescat, Joe Zawinul.

I may have to play either Heavy Weather or In A Silent Way later, in tribute (my brother had borrowed Bitches Brew).

Sad,sad day. Certainly the tributes offered here reveal how beloved he really was.
