I have had this discussion many times with my band mates. I also have heard opinions ranging from Steve Howe  to Robert Fripp on this topic. I was not around to see it happen were from the 90's. The general feeling is The Beatles opened up the avenues with Revolver and Sgt. Peppers with there influence, but it took shape with King Crimson, Tull and Yes.

Hmmm.... I think it has probably been around as long as "conservative" rock has been around, in that it takes rules and conventions to break with them. I guess in that sense, the first caveman who started playing odd time sigs on his log of wood or piece of rock invented prog rock.

No, seriously, it's a good guess that, while the progressive spirit has probably always been stirring in rock, the Beatles probably opened up the dorrs a lot.

Certif1ed has a thread going concerning bands from England in the 60's called 1-2-3 and Clouds and their claim to have been a band that influenced Robert Fripp, etc...  Depending how his research goes they may be the original.

I have always been told/believed that King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King is the first prog album.  Others point to either Pink Floyd or the Beatles as the first.

I like to think that Days of Future Passed was the first prog album, but most people accord that honor to In The Court of the Crimson King.

Some time a psychedelic band decided to quote some classical music. Who or when it was I don't know, but I'll agree with Moody Blues or Procol Harum

David Allaen and Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine kicked it off and Hendrix and Pink Floyd kicked it into high gear. Meanwhile John Cale, Frank Zappa, Don Van Vliet, Bobby Fripp and those dudes from Magma were up to something also.
Anyway, as a disclaimer, I may be totally wrong.

I think The Beatles opened the door and bands like King Crimson and Pink Floyd stepped inside the prog-room... Wink

The Beatles earn way too much credit for what they do.

I believe in all honesty that King Crimson was the first band to really form the progressive sound, as bands like Pink Floyd and The Beatles sort of gave them the tools to construct it.

Krautrock was invented (unintentionally) by Son House and his one chord 15 bar blues.
Symphonic prog by Beethoven, with its' pretentions fully maxxed out by Mahler.
RPI is a by-product of Galileo & Da Vinci's penchant for geniusness & artistic temperments. Jazz Fusion is an indirect result of the industrial revolution when "piece" work became a way of measuring productivity, i.e. the more you make, the more chance you get kept = more notes, more adulation, leading to even more notes. Prog Folk is inspired mainly by people's love of mandolins & high pitched female voices, therefore originates from ol' england & the Appalachians. Prog Metal is descended from Ford's assembly line theory - each adding his part to the whole, specialising in one's own instrument, with no clue as to the rest of the music.
And of course, RIO/Avant-Garde is a byproduct of our noisy society, as many people can no longer hear adequately.
So to summarize ... any answer, or guess for that matter, will likely not make any sense to the point of rendering the whole exercise useless, except to amuse one's elf. LOL

It's ok to name The Nice, Procol Harum, The Beatles and the Moody Blues as begginers of the genre (KC bringing it up, as someone said), but just don't dismiss Traffic's Mr. Fantasy so easily...... Ermm
The best you can is good enough...

I would say the Beatles did it with Revolver, perhaps helped by Zappa's Freak Out.

These are the earliest recordings (1966) listed on the Archives that look at all prog to me.

http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?year=1966

So, prog fans, we must attempt to change the way annual time is kept by switching from AD to AP (After Prog)! It is currently Year 41 AP.

The answer depends on what you consider prog rock. I'd rather just think a massive amount of musicians/bands together created prog-rock so we don't have to have another conversation like this. So many threads exist on this already.

WHO is not a valid question, because no person or band alone started Progressive Rock.

Progressive Rock is the logical consequence of a musical evolutionary process that took many years to reach it's peak.

almost all the groups mentioned are good answers to the question, however there is one glaring omission: Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys...  yep, if we're talking first rock artists that seriously and skillfully matched true classical motifs with rock - not to mention concept projects - it was these guys  Smile
