Michael Hedges/ Acoustic Guitar

   I've never liked the acoustic guitar at all.  Opting instead, to listen to music with electric guitar and classical nylon string guitar.  This is probably do to the fact that I've associated it with folk, country, blues and straight-ahead rock music--all of which I don't particularly like.  It could be do to my distaste for the instruments usual bright, twangyness.  Recently, though I've watched a video of Michael Hedges where he is playing a Bela Bartok inspired piece and have decided to give the instrument a try.  Now Hedge's new age, midwest-flavored, Pat Methenyesque music is ok, but I thought there might be someone more to my liking.

I was wondering if anyone could direct me toward some acoustic player(s) more in the modern classical, advant-garde, jazz tradition.

	This question is apparently harder to answer than it first appears. I have a fair number of Michael Hedges albums, but very few by other acoustic guitarist and none in the specific areas you are asking. However, many guitarists have released acoustic albums that are not in the genres you don't like (if that makes sense). Here's a list of possible guitarists, perhaps someone else can recommend albums by them... 	I heard a version of Penguin Cafe Orchestra's Music for a Found Harmonium arranged for acoustic guitar and performed by (I think) Colin Reid which may be up your street.

	Michael Hedges is an excellent guitarist, who often could sound like more than one guitarist playing at once without overdubs. Big loss to the world of music when he died prematurely in 1997 in an auto accident. To DarqDean's recommendations I'd have to add Larry Coryell, who doesn't play exclusively acoustic but has put out a few acoustic only albums including at least one with the aforementioned Philip Catherine.
	Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
