only one person per band position as set up below, and they must be artists/musicians who are primarily identified as prog musicians or spent most of their career with a progressive band (ie, no John Lennons, Miles Davis etc)

you get
1 lead vocalist
1 second lead vocalist/harmony vocals
1 bass player
2 drummers or 1 primary drummer/ 1 percussionist
1 lead guitar
1 secondary lead/or rhythm guitar
1 keyboard/organist
1 wild card (can be a second keyboard player, horn/brass player or other instrument OTHER than drummer, bass or guitar)

so the most your band can have in it is 9 members

Sharks Dung in Plastic? Confused

Bass-- Jannik Top

As to my "legal" all star prog lineup....

Hmm.....

I call it: MAGMARUSH. LOLLOL

Vocals-- Geddy Lee
Vocals-- Christian Vander
Bass-- Geddy Lee
Drums-- Neil Peart
Drums-- Christian Vander
Guitars-- Alex Lifeson
Keyboards-- Geddy Lee

Wink

Here's another alternative for what I would really want as well:

Vocals-- Roine Stolt
Vocals-- Jon Anderson
Bass-- Geddy Lee
Drums-- Neil Peart
Drums-- Christian Vander
Guitars-- Frank Zappa
Guitars-- Robert Fripp
Keyboards-- Keith Emerson
Violin-- David Cross

Not sure what I would call that one, but it's just as absolutely wicked (probably more so than the first). Big%20smile

alright, let me see if I can make picks that I can live with for my own poll:

vocals--John Wetton (can chip in at bass while Levin plays Stick also)
harmony/secondary vocals--Annie Haslam
bass---Tony Levin
drums---Carl Palmer
drums/percussion---Bill Bruford
lead guitar---Steve Hackett (by a hair over Gilmour)
second lead/rhythm---Robert Fripp (by a hair over Steven Wilson)
keyboards--Rick Wakeman (sorry Mr Banks)
wild card---Kerry Minnear--Gentle Giant (can play reed instruments, sax, mellotrons, keyboards, also can fill in on background vocals) (so wanted to squeeze Kerry Livgren or Eddie Jobson in there somewhere)

this band would simply be awesome at majestic orchestral symphonic rock of the highest magnitude, with plenty of trons, complex time changes, great melodic harmony singing. But with Fripp/Bruford and Kerry Minnear in the house, it would be a very creative and eclectic outfit as well. The versatility of this band would be unparalleled, as it could go from soft pastoral romantic passages, very atmospheric with Hackett, Haslam and Minnear's influences, to thundering and searing prog that could be heavy and powerful with the powerhouse rhythm section of Levin and Palmer/Bruford, supplemented by soaring hammonds and mellotrons of both Wakeman and Minnear. Wetton and Haslam's voices complement each other well, and both could trade off vocals on songs, or share vocals in the same song. I defy anyone to create a more amazing collection of musicians than this one.

Why not?

Keyboards- Dave Stewart
Drums- Phil Collins
Percussion- Jamie Muir
Guitar- John McLaughlin
Bass- Stanley Clarke

Essentially a fusion outfit.

EDIT: Which, upon further reflexion, is quite similar to bang!'s picks Embarrassed... great minds think alike, it seems.

its all about synergy so the elements from each band added must some how compliment each other ..  every time I attempt to do this I run into problems ..  I have never heard a completely perfect band some come close but the more I look at all the aspects I find flaws, Either song writing musicality , vocals ...  dare I say  image   and most importantly fresh new creative ideas that  also have a certain commercial potential (its necessary unfortunately to perpetuate prog to new market places I have come to accept that sad fact)...  everybody steals nothing is new under the sun ..  which is why if I was going to put a list together it would be comprised of the titans of prog and not modern prog artists...  so my list would be predictable and boring

Peter Hammill - lead vocal, piano, guitars
Gordon Haskell - bass, occasional vocal
Michael Giles - drums, occasional vocal
Gilles Schetagne - drums, percussion
Clem Clempson - lead guitar, occasional vocal
David Cross - violin, viola, mellotron

A Life In Pictures (10.32) - Hammill/Cross/Giles/Clempson/Haskell
Palette ! [323,168,251] (3.49, vocals from Haskell) - Hamill/Haskell/Clempson
A Brush With Death [Improvisation] (6.23) - Cross/Giles/Haskell/Clempson/Schetagne
Palette " [121, 036, 090] (4.12, vocals from Clempson) - Hamill/Clempson/Cross
First Stroke (3.12) - Cross/Schetagne
Final Stroke (3.56) - Giles/Schetagne/Haskell
The Ancient Gallery (9.58) - Cross/Hammill/Giles

No full-time organist or keyboardist, and really Peter Hammill would not be expected to contribute lots of guitar (and the others not a lot of vocals).

This ignores the fact that what I really want is something along the lines of:

David Cross (Violin, Viola)
Jerry Goodman (Violin)
David Jackson (Saxophone, Flute)
Vincent Langlois (Percussion, Piano)
Andy McCulloch (Drums, Percussion)

I'll be sneaky and add some instruments through the back door:
drums 1: Pierre Moerlen (will also play xylophone, vibraphone, marimba and keyboards)
drums 2: Mani Neumeier (will also play kalimba and African percussion instruments)
bass: Helmut Hattler (will also add some synths)
guitar 1: Roland Schaeffer (will also play sax and nagaswaram)
guitar 2: Roman Bunka (will also play oud)
keyboards: Barbara Dennerlein; with her pedal technique she will add some extra bass lines
vocals 1: Peter Hammill; will play rhythm guitar and additional keyboards too
vocals 2: Peter Blegvad; he will add some guitar and clarinet too
additional player: Eddie Jobson: keyboards and violin

alternative additional player:
Didier Malherbe: all kinds of woodwinds

how is that for a band with many flavors?

the bands called 'Ma Jambe Baise des Blessures'

Drums - Stewart Copeland
Bass - Chris Squire
Guitars - Jan Akkerman
Keys - Keith Emerson

Doing Long Concept pieces with a big symphonic sound but with a very jaunty jazzy edge!

(Emerson will have to use mellotron wether he likes it or not)
