The bad news, Alberto, we had exactly the same poll a few weeks ago and of course H. Hopper got the most votes.

R. Babbington is maybe the fastest, the most technical and everything else you want but never had the warmth you can hear coming out of the fuzz bass of HUGH HOPPER.
When you hear a disc with Hopper, you know who is playing the bass....Such a personal sound that really helped shaping the unique sound of early SOFT MACHINE.

And like in the other poll, poor KEVIN AYERS the first SM bassist has been forgotten..Not that he was the best, but that's dear KevinLOL

I saw Roy Babbington once when he played in Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia. He was excellent. But I love Hopper too. A tie for me.

Roy Babbington is the better bassist, but Hugh Hopper was the definitive bassist for Soft Machine.

Gotta love that fuzz!

Yeah I agree with Febus that Hopper has a really distinctive sound which I instantly recognize.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

Yes you are right, but Babbington plays ''double bass''only on the second side of the LP '. He was still mor of a guest than an official member, but sure he has already his feet in the door.Thumbs%20Up

His bowed double bass on 'As If' is one of the many high points of a thoroughly splendid album.

Good morning Mr. Phelps. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to choose between two impossible options, both so close in quality that any rationale would be razor-thin. Again, should you or any of your IM force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of their actions. Good luck, Jim.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.
