3. Pawn Hearts Man Erg. The furthest out Van Der Graaf ever got, this controversial album isn't for everybody. But it's a lot of fun. Man-Erg's piano melodies are beautiful and the contrasting harsh section is incredibly complex and abrasive.

LOL shows what I know about science. The freeze frame makes much more sense.

I think October is the time of the year that i listen to VDGG the most because they seem to match a Halloween mood more than probably any other prog band. I guess it's partly due to Still Life having that orange tree cover affect on me lol.

The 'orange tree cover' is a freeze frame (Still Life) of a charge from a Van de Graaff (sic) Generator.

VdGG/Hammill do definately, for me at least, have an Autumnal quality in their music. It could be that almost every time that I saw them in the 1970s it was around October and November.

Van der Graaf,'The Quiet Zone...' on the other hand, has, for me, a Summer(y) feel to it

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

This is a tough one...

1. Pawn Hearts - A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers
2. Still Life - La Rossa
3. Godbluff - The Uncercover Man

Pawn Hearts and Still Life both are exceptionally good, and it was really tough to rate on over another.

I bought Present recently

best tracks
Nutter Alert, Every Bloody Emperor,

while its a good return to form nothing on it is as good as the choices here from various posts. I think it would be almost impossible to return to those glory days of the first 5 albums.

list today is:
1. Pawn Hearts (POLHK)
2. H to He (Killer)
3. Godbluff (Arrow)

2 - Godbluff - The Sleepwalkers has to be my personal fav... it's the song that introduced me to the band.

3 - Still Life - Childlike Faith

but After those three albums (which are without doubt my favorites from VDGG) i would rank some of Peter Hammill's solo albums over the remaining VDGG albums.
In this order:
4 - The Silent Corner (Modern, Red Shift & A Louse is not a Home)
5 - Chameleon in the Shadow of Night (
Easy to Slip Away & The Black Room)
6 - Over (
Time Heals & On Tuesday she used to Yoga)

then, finally...
7 - H to He (Pioneers over C)
8 - The Least We Can Do is Wave (White Hammer)
9 - World Record (Wondering)
10 - Present - Every bloody emperor
I have to agree with your choices of Hamill solo albums. Especialy Time heals which is a very old love of mine. I would also add Shingle from "Nadir's ..."

6. H to He – Pioneers

Haven´t heard Trisector yet. Seems like I have to order it on the Internet, cause it´s impossible to get it in the stores.

1. Pawn Hearts, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
2. Still Life, Childlike Faith in Childhood's End
3. Godbluff, hmm... that one is even harder to decide....

I pretty much enjoy Still Life and Godbluff the same, but since Still Life is longer, it gets the quantitative boost.  H to He isn't far behind either, and The Least not too far behind that!  One of my favorite bands, been in my top 5 for pretty much the last two years, which is when I got into them.

1. Still Life - "Pilgrims"
2. Pawn Hearts - "Lemmings"
3. Godbluff - "Arrow"

Best song by them is "House With No Door" though, "Refugees" probably beats out those 3 albums also.

I love the variety of the replies. Don't really argue with any of them either.

1. Still Life - "Childlike Faith at Childhood's End" (4/5 stars)
2. Godbluff - "Sleepwalkers" (4/5 stars)
3.Pawn Hearts - Man Erg" (4/5 stars)

star ratings are for the albums themselves.
