Greetings fellow Prog Rock fans, I've been listening to Prog Rock for 15 years now but I'm a complete newbie to The ProgArchives. I used to be a member of the Genesis Talking Shop but a couple of years ago I got locked out and they now appear to be charging. I started getting into Genesis and Pink Floyd when I was in my mid teens and soon started exploring the solo works of the members of these groups, particularly Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel and Roger Waters. In recent years I've been broadening my prog rock interests to include The Alan Parsons Project, Mostly Autumn, King Crimson, Spock's Beard. I look forward to discussing some of my favourite tracks and discovering other groups I wouldn't normally have thought about. Regards, |

Judge not this race by empty remains. Do you judge God by his creatures when they are dead, all wrapped to go like Kentucky Fried?

A couple of newer bands that the Genesis fan in you might find of interest is a band such as Unifaun, who just released their debut album channeling 1970's Genesis. Another band, who are up for inclusion on PA but I don't think are here yet is Leitmotiv. They released an album called Entangled. If my memory serves me correctly it is available for free download on their website; similar to the Radiohead release of In Rainbows, they only ask you to pay what you want to pay.
Since they aren't on PA yet, here is a link to the Leitmotiv Website http://www.leitmotivonline.com and MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/leitmotivquebec.
Another modern band that I really enjoy is Izz, who have released 4 or 5 albums now. Very good musically with male and female lead vocals.
A new album that I really love is The Lost Art of Time Travel from the band Presto Ballet. I found this album to be absolutely stunning and I think that it would appeal to anyone who is a fan of the traditional 1970's prog bands.
Lastly, as you have mentioned Spock's Beard, other bands that might interest you could be Marillion, Transatlantic, The Flower Kings, The Tangent, and Kaipa. All of these bands kind of intermingle and have some overlap in personnel.
I suppose this is a fairly reasonable start on recommendations and if any of these happen to work I would be happy to provide more.

Thank you both for your suggestions.
YesFan72: I've wanted to investigate Yes for some time now but have never got around to it. I used to share a lab with someone who liked Yes but can't remember what albums he used to play. I guess 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' is the place to start?
rushfan4: I'm taking your advice on Entangled. Also, The Lost Art of Time Travel sounds interesting, think I'll check out Amazon for that one.
Regards,
Pinquean.

Welcome aboard! You may like Anglagard and Fruupp who sound very much like early Genesis in my opinion. If you haven't listened to any Italian symphonic groups, check out Le Orme or Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso.

You're welcome. I hope that you enjoy them. Please let me know what you think, as it is always nice to get feedback on suggestions. I like recommending music to people but I find it difficult since it is hard to gauge someone's tastes based on 1 post. Since you like 70's era Genesis, I think that Entangled should appeal to you. I enjoy it. And so far all of the reviews that I have read on The Lost Art of Time Travel have been positive, so I think that I am pointing you in to a really good album there. |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Close To The Edge all the way. Tales is a much harder piece to get into and requires serious focus to catch on. I love it, but it took me a while to do that. |
