Don't know if this has been done before but it seems an interesting one for me and a nice challenge for anyone to put the 21 sub genres (actually 22 categories but various is not really a genre of course) of our site in order of your preference/taste. And to add another aspect to it you can name the band you think is significant for the genre. This doesn't have to be the best or biggest or your most favourite band but it's supposed to be the band that fits the sub genre the best (in your opinion of course). Good Luck. And if you think this is (too) hard you can check your profile(the pie), this could lead you the way ! Oh and also have a look in the different subgenres. For the bands and just to learn more about them. Really interesting way to check out and contingently listen stream songs !

Btw  I will give the example:

1. Neo Progressive (Satellite)
2. Prog metal (Threshold)
3. Symphonic Prog (Yes)
4. Heavy Prog (Tiles)
5. Psychedelic/Space (Ozric Tentacles)
6. Jazz Rock/Fusion (Brand X)
7. Prog related (Led Zeppelin)
8. Crossover (Moody Blues)
9. Progressive electronic (Tangerine Dream)
10. Canterbury Scene (Caravan)
11. Proto-prog (Procol Harum)
12. Tech/extreme prog metal (Meshuggah)
13. Prog Folk (Jethro Tull)
14. Indo-prog/Raga Rock (?)
15. Experimental/post metal (Anathema)
16. Post Rock/Math Rock (Sigur Ros)
17. Krautrock (Can)
18. Eclectic prog (VanderGraaf Generator)
19. Italian Symphonic Prog (PFM)
20. RIO Avant-prog (Frank Zappa)
21. Zeuhl (Magma)

I hope we can keep things civilized. This is not about loving or hating sub genres and to kick each others *ss. Just to give a view on each members' taste/preferences/order of sub genres.
A day without prog is a wasted day

3 Progressive Electronic 24 3.54
4 Canterbury Scene 23 3.65
5 Zeuhl 21 3.81
6 Eclectic Prog 10 3.70

Which is a pretty good approximation, except that Zeuhl would be joint first with RIO.

I only included genres that I feel I have sufficient knowledge of. No reason to put a genre in the list based on one band.

1. Tech/Extreme Prog Metal
2. Experimental/Post Metal
3. Eclectic Prog
4. Crossover Prog
5. Prog Related
6. Symphonic Prog

I guess I should listen to more of that Canterbury Scene that everyone seems to adore.

To be honest its Just a load of Symphonic and Eclectic bands, all the obvious ones Crimson, Gensesis etc, then the Bands in brackets but not the genre. Basically I only like Symphonic prog and Eclectic prog, then some 10 or something other bands that are a different bit of prog.
My two favourite bands Are Gentle Giant and Jethro Tull, but Floyd, Genesis, Crimson, Yes, Rush, ELP and Camel are up there too, then Tool and Mars Volta.

Let the maps of war be drawn !

* I hope everyone realises that we are all working on cracking the Prog Code here. Once all of these genres have been slotted into the sequence that everyone agrees is the correct harmonic order then the Universe will be de-stabilised and the secrets of the Prog will be unlocked for all the world to marvel at. The Prog battalions will rise up: Neo will join forces with Zeuhl; Extreme Tech Metal will meld with Symphonic and Eclectic Prog, Math Rock will form an alliance with Prog Related, Proto Prog will realise it is really only Space/Psyche; Crossover will crossover to Post Metal; Heavy will form an alliance with Electronic; Krautrock will form a triumvirate with Prog Metal and Jazz Rock/Fusion and Canterbury will be twined with Rome (meanwhile... Raga will be a conscientious objector). Together we shall cross the Main stream and march upon the plains of popular music crushing all in our path to the mighty blast of 21st Century Schizoid Man from our super-charged iPods...

....Universal World Domination will be ours. (except on Tuesdays)

Oh, I just wrote my favorite band from each genre.

Wouldn't pick Catherine Ribeiro, as the most representative although she's my favorite in psych/space. She might as well have been in Progfolk. Neither is Soft Machine the most fitting Canterbury band.
