Umphrey's McGee, on this site, is under jazz-rock/fusion. Phish, on this site, are under prog-related. However, if you're familiar with these 2 bands, you realize they both play jazz-rock/fusion, but both also play a plethora of different styles of music.
Umphrey's McGee's music is more on the hard prog rock side with metal leanings and jazz/funk tendancies. but they play more than even that. their new album proves how they may be the most progressive band right now, not to mention their new album is not really jazz-rock at all. maybe eclectic? Phish is another band, before Umphreys, and explored many territories of music, and some of their songs are some of the best prog rock you'll ever find. These guys kept the spirit of progressive music ALIVE when prog was at it's lowest, the late 80's, early 90's. Songs like Guyute, You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead, My Friend, My Friend, Divided Sky, David Bowie, Reba, etc... are songs even the casual prog listener would agree are great prog songs. The music goes everywhere and can't be pin pointed to one style. I think eclectic also works for these guys. im curious to see your opinions. i posted a thread about this is the improve site section. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=55464 i think both these bands should be in eclectic prog, being thats the only category i could see them in. what do you think? |

I've just replied to that thread, darkshade. We should probably discuss this issue in just one thread, preferably that one. |
