Well, I love Fish as a performer, but I never found his lyrics to be that profound either... But then, look who's saying they are...Cert... and he likes Radiohead..

I think Peart is the best- his lyrics has depth and meaning to them. Gabriel is good, more lofty and ornate, but overall lack that though-provoking depth Peart has (but he's still good).

I would choose Christian Vander from Magma

Just take a look at these lyrics:

U malawalawala wo siweli welohndai dowi weli wehnsai (twice)
Eweleh do weliwe si lehnsai, eweleh we do weliwe si lehnsai (twice)
Tu..... Tu.... Tu.... Tu....
U malawalawala wo siweli welohndai dowi weli wehnsai (twice)
Eweleh do weliwe si lehnsai, eweleh we do weliwe si lehnsai (twice)
Tu..... Tu.... Tu.... Tu....
Tu.......... Tu........ Tu............. Tu
o ewileh wi lehnso

Impressive..

(Only kidding)

Peter Hammill gets my vote...

Roger Waters is probably one of the most impressive lyricists, although his output has gone down in recent years.

Another lyricist that gets my attention...although his lyrics are sometimes very convoluted, abstract, and sometimes...well, there are English problems...but I still like his work: Mikael Akerfelt of Opeth.

How Greg Lake has 10 votes is beyond me.  He's had some moments, but no way is he the best lyricist of all those people.  Or have you not heard "Still, You Turn Me On?"

It's a really tough call.  I'm kind of partial towards Roger Waters since Pink Floyd has been such a huge part of my life, but something has compelled me to vote for Ian Anderson.  As backup for this decision, I refer you to Thick as a Brick.

And not a single one of You thought about Steve Harris from Maiden...oh well Waters is better but why not give Steve a chance? Maiden isn't prog ( butin my opinion it is!!!) but this isn't about prog music lyrics only...

Greg Lake? Gimme a break!

I personally wouldn't have dreamt of listing Lake among the greatest. He just popped up in the earlier conversation and I knew some would vote for him.

Evidently you didn't notice that the question was asking who the best prog lyricist is...

Ian Anderson. Acerbic, colourful, painfully aware of his own intelligence - everything a good poet ought to be!

Fish without a doubt.

Even on a b-sides like Cinderella Search and a simple song like Tux On
his lyrics were/are brilliant.

Ian Anderson is beyond any compare for me here. No pomposity, a great sense of humor. Great lyrics writer!

Neil Peart. Not only in prog, but in music in general.
