Topic: NWOBHM.. the Poll Posted: June 16 2009 at 12:16 |
So... The New Wave of Britisch Heavy Metal poll. Wich group do you prefer and why?
First. All music I listen started because of the one cd of Iron Maiden my brother lent from the local library, about 10 years ago. I was 11 years old and in the last year of elementary school. I quickly dropped all popmusic that I heard at the radio and became an Iron Maiden fan. Secondly... Metallica and the Symphony made me see that there was more then just metal. And finally, Judas Priest proved that they made good music back in the '70 too. Iron Maiden is still my alltime favourite metalband, because they made so many great albums and I like their image and style. The band has a sort of feel! Moreover, they introduced sophisticated song writing to me and partly cleared the way for my progressive urges.

Metallica was never part of the NWOBHM, they're not even British...

hey man , Metallica are from the US. Therefore couldn't be part of the NWOBHM , can't you replace them with Saxon or Diamond Head?

Thank you! I looked at wikipedia and didn't think of the fact Metallica are from the US. Diamond Head it is then.

I feel dissatisfied with this poll, personally... there's GOT to be more than three prominent NWOBHM bands! (Not that I'm too knowledgeable on my knowledge of the style...) Iron Maiden from this list. I used to hate them because of Bruce, but Seventh Son album made me appreciate them (and him) oh so very much.

Go to Wikipedia and search for NWOBHM to see a pretty full list of the NWOBHM bands. Of the bands listed in this poll Iron Maiden certainly stands above the other two. But Diamond Head were a huge influence on Metallica's music. Which is why Metallica are usually mentioned in any article about NWOBHM.

I doubt that JudasPriest are actually part of NWOBHM (their first album was in 1974, while NWOBHM started in the late 70's)
Tygers of Pan Tang Blitzkrieg Demon Saxon
are some of the bands, Iron Maiden was definitely the best out of them (however, only the first couple of records are actually NWOBHM)

Exactly . JP's first albums were released when prog was still alive and kicking, while Maiden's debut dates back from 1980, as most of the early efforts of those bands. However, The mighty Priest were doubtlessly the #1 source of inspiration for the NWOBHM, and they also had their commercial breakthrough (with British Steel) in 1980). As to voting... Uhmm, that's not easy. A toss-up between Priest and Maiden, two of my favourite bands - though for sheer metallic glory I might choose Priest.

As with Raff and previous poster, Judas Priest predated the NWOBHM by a fair while, but from this list they win by a country mile for me. I also loved Saxon during this period, and does anyone remember Bruce Bruce pre Maiden days?

Iron Maiden for me. I mostly enjoy Priest´s first two albums. Their late seventies/ early eighties output is a bit too leather fisted glove in the air macho kind of heavy metal for my taste ( I hate Manowar with a vengeance). But of course I own all Judas Priest albums. I´m a compulsive collector . I´m still in the early stages of checking out Diamond Head, but the things I´ve heard so far sounds pretty good to me.

Iron Maiden for me, because from them begun everything that we know today as heavy metal music and they were the cherry on the cake.
Judas Priest is not a band from the movement NWOBHM. Do not put them in this movement because they are not, many times I saw this confusion.

Chalk up one for Diamond Head!!
I loved this band back in the early 80s, they were great live and their early demise was a real shame. They are treading the boards again now, but that's a pale shadow of the original. Of course Maiden have been (largely) sensational for almost 30 years, but I couldn't bear to see Diamond Head voteless.
Incidentally Judas Priest pre-dated the NWOBHM by about 6 or 7 years!

Judas Priest were not part of the NWOBHM.
The main players in that late 1970's scene were
Iron Maiden Samson Diamond Head Def Leppard Saxon
plus a ton of others that came and went very quickly

It's ok this poll to be here I think , because two bands from this movement are here in PA. Iron Maiden and of course a band that nobody seams to know from NWOBHM is Magnum. A little on the edge because of the list mentioned but ok to me to be here , at least for Iron Maiden .

Iron Maiden are in Prog-Related, which has its own section, and Magnum are not mentioned in the poll Therefore, the poll does not belong here. Having been a member for four years, and also an Admin for some time, I know how things work here. Anyway, I do know Magnum (even have one album by them), and I think they have very little in common with the NWOBHM, though they were lumped together with them at the time.

I couldn't care how much experience you have... just answer the question... why does it have to be so sophisticated? Almost everyone here listens to hard rock and metal! .. I know I will get into trouble for this comment...
