These three bands are all that's in the top 12 of Eclectic Prog at the moment. Which of them do you prefer?
My own vote goes to VDGG. Their music is so full of emotion and power, there is absolutely no band like them. King Crimson is a very good second. 70's KC is really good and like VDGG very unique. The 80's reincarnation of the band is much less interesting though IMO. |

VDGG is incredible but KC is without a doubt the winner. LTIA is the most emotionally powerful album I've ever heard (which is probably a bit odd, but whatever...)

My favourite of those three will be...
...now imagine a ball bouncing left, right, to and fro in a pinball machine. Uh, no pick. They're all great, and each of them is from different galaxy. But hey, that's Eclectic Prog |

KC probably simply for having a bigger body of work. And the bigger your body of work the more eclectic you can be. GG doesn't really seem all that eclectic as much. Except for their diversion into the commercialistic they were much more consistent. VDGG, I've never actually explored.

I absolutely adore all three. Gentle Giant comes in third, simply because they don't have the impressive scope of King Crimson and Van der Graaf. I have way more listens to King Crimson than the other two, but I have a lot more material from them. I'd have to say that VdGG comes in first place for me. Peter Hammill is such an amazing songwriter and vocalist.
And, just to add, I would have to be honest and say that these giants of 70s eclectic prog are a thousand times better and more interesting than the giants of 70s symphonic prog. This is the area of prog music that I hold most dear. Edited by LiquidEternity - August 12 2009 at 17:53 |

I used to say that I prefer my GG without VD (though I love some VdGG, but Hammills histrionics irritated me, or as I used to say, his hammy vocals make me ill). Nowadays, I'd usually rather listen to VdGG than GG (but like both). It's between KC and VdGG for me. I'll give a vote to VdGG.
EDIT: Most of my favourite albums in Eclectic are by different bands, though: Bubu's Anabelas, Emmanuel Booz's Le Jour ou Les Vache, Jean Paul Prat's Masal, Kultivator's Barndomens Stigar (formerly in Zeuhl), Gnidrolog's In Spite of... , Ma Banlieue Flasque's etc. And in modern Prog, Taal's albums. SHame that the top 20 are as homogenous as they are in terms of a few bands dominating it. More eclectic is better. Edited by Logan - August 12 2009 at 18:12 |
