VdGG
KC
GG

All of them are great bands, though.

Gentle Giant follow closely by VDGG, I was never a fan of KC, some albums appeal more than other to me, but overall not a fan. Voted for GG

No vote for me. All three are among the most essential of my progressive collection. For me these bands are all more important then Genesis, Pink Floyd or even Jethro Tull.

What makes this a great poll however, is the fact that KC, VDGG and GG all made a lot of progression in different parts of the progressive spectrum.

Number one is King Crimson. Few bands are as original, diverse, and gifted in songwriting, song crafting, and playing their instruments.

Which leaves us with Gentle Giant and V der G.

Gentle Giant is a band that is fairly nice to listen to when the mood strikes one, albiet not the most interesting band on earth.

V, on the G hand, is a band that is fairly dreadful to listen to (albiet interesting); when they aren't writing good pieces, they go usually for mediocre boring pieces. Or they mess it all up by biting off more than they can chew.

Which is why Van der Gaff Generator is my second pick; I would rather listen to something interesting that could be great than something that's nice and safe (well, nice and safe from a prog-point of view).

King Crimson because of Islands, essentially.

However, overall discography, I prefer Gentle Giant.

King Crimson. Deathrabbit's prediction looks like it's holding true.

EDIT: Most of my favourite albums in Eclectic are by different bands, though: Bubu's Anabelas, Emmanuel Booz's Le Jour ou Les Vache, Jean Paul Prat's Masal, Kultivator's Barndomens Stigar (formerly in Zeuhl), Gnidrolog's In Spite of... , Ma Banlieue Flasque's etc.  And in modern Prog, Taal's albums.  SHame that the top 20 are as homogenous as they are in terms of a few bands dominating it.  More eclectic is better.

Wow, the sample here of Bubu is awesome! Thanks for mentioning them! I'll be sure to check out those other bands as well.

Glad you like it! Anabelas is one of my all-time favourites.  Check out the myspace too: http://www.myspace.com/bubuprog

Gentle Giant first with KC and VdGG tied for a very close second.

I absolutely adore all three. Gentle Giant comes in third, simply because they don't have the impressive scope of King Crimson and Van der Graaf. I have way more listens to King Crimson than the other two, but I have a lot more material from them. I'd have to say that VdGG comes in first place for me. Peter Hammill is such an amazing songwriter and vocalist.

And, just to add, I would have to be honest and say that these giants of 70s eclectic prog are a thousand times better and more interesting than the giants of 70s symphonic prog. This is the area of prog music that I hold most dear.
