Topic: asian prog? Posted: May 12 2005 at 12:58 |
I'm going to be visiting Cambodia this summer (with a one or two night
stopover in Hong Kong on the way there). Is there any good prog that'd
be easy to get in these areas that is hard to find in the US?

Maybe you can get Teru's Symphonia, an outstanding band from Japan, which is very hard to find (At least in South America).
If you can search for the albums "Fable on the Seven Pillows" and "The Gate", despite the lyrics in Japanese, they have an outstanding symphonic sound with clear Genesis, Enid, Renaissance and even Crimson influence, what is strange for a japanese band more usually oriented towards fusion.

I've lived in C'bodia, and the only "prog" you'll probably find is a few pirated copies of "The Wall" at the Russian Market. As for Japanese bands....well, there's a whole neo-prog scene there, esp. in the cities....Tokyo, Osaka, Yokahama, Kyoto. The New Trolls are the basic pattern of the neo-progs bands. Even so, you'll have to dig deep to find the scene.....or just wait around for ANOTHER Dream Theater Asian Tour. There's one again this summer I believe.
Hong Kong is a much more cosmopolitan place than C'bodia, and you may be able to pick up prog CDs in some excellent record shops.....Singapore, too, has excellent music shops.
Cambodia REALLY is a super place to visit. I got to go off into the Elephant Mts. in the SW of the country....really far out place, both geographically and mentally.
Since you've only got a very short time there....the Angkor Wat CAN'T be missed. I've been waiting for some prog band to do a concept LP based on the temples there.....I just hope Jarre, Vangelis, and Oldfield don't get there first!

Cambodia isn't a great place to buy music, but it's an amazing place and it's well worth spending some time there. Angkor Wat deserves some serious exploration - you can get 1 day, 3 day or 7 day passes and I'd recommend at least the 3 day option. You also need to hire transport to visit Angkor Wat, and it's worth spending a bit to get a car with a knowledgable driver and air conditioning, which cost $20 a day when I was there.
I don't know about concept LPs based on Angkor, but Ruins have featured images from the temples on their album covers and Yoshida Tatsuya is a bit of an archeology nut - check out their website (you'll find the link on their entry in the archive).

Actually, I'll be staying in Phnom Penh for the most part and going to
Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat for three days. I'll be in Hong Kong for
two nights on the way there and one night on the way back, and I'll be
in Japan for a bit (but we only have a layover of about an hour so I
won't get to leave the airport). Thanks for the reccomendations, I'll
have to look for thoses. Any other suggestions?

There were some Indonesian prog bands floating around at one time. I saw Discus at Baja prog a few years ago. Guruh Gipsy is an Indonesian prog band from the 70s that have seen some reissues of their stuff and Makara was from the 80s, but had a reunion album out not to long ago.
There's a band from Singapore that was big in Singapore and Hong Kong in the 60s/70s called The Quests. They were more Psychadelic in nature.. but had a lot of Hammond in places..
There was also a prog folk band from Thailand called Caravan... hmmm

Sumatra, ho! Man, I've never met more die hard proggers than those friends I met in the north of Sumatra. They introduced me to records and bands that my proghead friends and I had never heard of.....and they were some of the kindest blokes, too. Unfortunately, this was in the late 80s, so no e-mail addy or telephone # (phones in homes were somewhat of a rarity in Banda Ache at the time). I'd love to meet them again for another session - I do recall that there were several homegrown prog bands from Java and Bali.....wish I'd somehow kept in touch.
