Tony Banks > All other Keyboard players
(in my opinion)

Banton is a very good organist; the only redeeming feature in VDGG. But Banks is simply brilliant. One of the very best.

Both are clearly excellent players, Banton has a certain edge which makes him a very unique player, but Tony Banks has played some outstanding stuff on some of my favorite songs(Stagnation, Supper's Ready, Can-Utility, Watcher, Cinema Show, lots of others).
Tony gets my vote.

I'll give Hugh the vote because I like some of his crazy organ flourishes in VdGG.
Banks might be my least favorite player in Genesis... he's not really good or bad, but he's so damn prominent, give me more Steve Hackett... Banks kind of has his own sound but he's not really an outstanding player like Emerson, Wakeman or even a guy like Neal Morse for example, who is mainly a composer but still a good keys player.
Banks couldn't even play the intro to Firth of Fifth live... the word that comes to mind when I think of the guy is just, "weak". Anyway, I'm being kind of hard on the guy, he didn't ruin Genesis or anything but he could have done it better.

Banton, demi-god among organ players (as only Jon Lord deserves the 'god' accolade). Seriously, the man made Trisector work even in the absence of David Jackson. Tony Banks, on the other hand, leaves me cold. Can't deny the man's talent, however.

Tony Banks, who is one of my favourite keyboard players. Maybe no virtuoso, but an original player, who always went for the odd chord.
I like some of VdGG keyboard parts as well, though not as much as Genesis' keyboard parts

Banton is the finest incorporator of classical organ-work into rock as well as an immensely powerful rock organist. His sound, subtlety and individuality as an organist are, in my opinion, unmatched. In addition, he's responsible for some of the most interesting uses of the synthesiser and mellotron (on Pawn Hearts, in particular) and a very nuanced pianist.
Much as Banks is a great musician, if occasionally hamfisted when leading, Banton is an entirely underrated element of the Van Der Graaf Generator formula.

Banton for me no contest. Have you heard him on the "Present" double album, unbelieveable! The Quiet One mentioned he has an edge and on this album he uses distorted and fuzzed out runs that would make your hair stand on end.

I caught Philesis back in the day at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and there was a tour truck outside the venue, on the back someone had written on the dusty lift door...."The Tony Banks Band". I'd go with Tony on this one.

Banks again! Banton is also superb, and creates great atmosphere's in VDGG, but I think Banks is more versatile.
