I like Portnoy and I love the drums, but anything over a minute and without any kind of pattarn other than random notes is just.

I have the same as stonebeard. I don't get the beauty of a 6 minute drum solo. To me it sounds like he's just hitting the drums as fast as he can. Guess I just don't know anything about drumming :D

It's a fast and difficult drum solo but the one you posted by Weckl was more musical...

Some of the best drum solos by known drummers have come from Peart...

There's thousands of terrible drum solos out there, and this is one of them.

Playing drum solos can be a lot of fun, but I wouldn't go and do it in the public. It's definitely not as much fun for those listening.

I've heard a couple of good ones in my life though.

Yes, that's true, but we must think that Weckl is a jazz drummer and Portnoy is a metal drummer!!!

The drum solos are meant for show off and nothing else, there's nothing wrong with that and Portnoy is the master of playing while doing funny faces, spitting and uses the whooooole drum set... I guess it's good for the rest of band to take a little rest, but most of drum solos are really really boring to me, is just random noises... still Portnoy is the master...

No. Drum solos are not only for showing off. As some drummers have proved, drum solos can be musical. Rhythm is one of the main elements of music and knowing how to use it, plus the colors of a drum set, takes a lot of skills and can be interesting from a musical point of view.

Portnoy has never been a great soloist. He's damn fast and skilled. His solo is difficult, not great.

Well if you have not seeing his interaction with Rudess on a little break in the middle of "Beyond this Life" in the Live at the Budokan DVD, there's Portnoy playing "colours" and been very musical when the keyboards and the drums are aswering each other... so, he can do it, but at the end, the drummer will be always limited to the textures his drum kit already have, so it's quite limited if you compare it with a guitar or keyboard solo... but that particular part of the show is great, really really great... love your picture in the signature man...

I don't know what you mean by random notes ... from what I am hearing every note seems to be carefully placed.
