Hello!
So I'm looking for bands similar to Camel or Harmonium. I like the flute, organ/synth and the guitar a lot, especially when played in a slow/mellow/minor way. Any band you recommend?

You could also try Brazilian symphonic prog bands Tempus Fugit and Dogma, both of which I would recommend highly. You can listen to mp3 streams of them here on ProgArchives. Let me know what you think Tongue

Gotic might also be right up your alley. Another band you might consider is Asia Minor.

Camel....So maybe some more Canterbury?  Caravan has the instruments you spoke of and is pretty calm.  I'd mostly suggest the first album based on your criteria.

I have all Gong and Caravan albums! :) I'm downloading The Geese and the Ghost now. Thank you!
I'll check out the other mentioned bands as well!

So Camel and Harmonium are similar? I really love Harmonium (particularly Si On Avait), but havn't heard Camel (though I've read about it many times on this forum). If they have similarities I might get interested in it. I guess early King Crimson might be a good choice too.

Well, try other bands from Québec if you like Harmonium. Not necessarely similar but sometimes particularly good.
- Maneige
- Morse Code
- Octobre
- Engoulevent

These should be good bands to start with

Well, I guess a good band to start with is Harmonium itself... but I already did that. The thing is there are so many albums I want to get... I must go little by little. I hope when I feel I have a chance to check them out I can still find this thread.

There is one track in particular from Conventum's Le Bureau Central Des Utopies (which I do not remember the title), that is right up your alley. It has the flute, the atmospheric sound of Camel, and sustaining Fripp guitar in the background. Much of the album has the folky, light jazz touch, and mellow progressive rock feel of the 2 bands you have mentioned. There is more violin present than flute but, the style is the basically the same.

Less similar, but still might interest you quite a bit:

I don't really believe PFM sound in any way like Camel, though they are not as heavy as other Italian Seventies bands (Osanna, Balletto di Bronzo, Biglietto per l'Inferno). Anyway, if you are interest in trying something newer, I have recently come across an Austrian band called Blank Manuskript, whose debut album, Tales from an Island, is an excellent example of Camel-influenced symphonic prog. You can find them in our database, with a very enlightening review of the album by Ivan Melgar-MoreyClap.

Several people have so far mentioned Gotic. Their album Escenes is my favourite Spanish prog album, and I listen to a lot of Spanish prog. It's completely instrumental, mixes symphonic prog with some light fusion, and every track features flute/piccolo and lush keyboards. However, just to warn you... very little guitar. It really is a great album though.
