I think I'll go for the debut because of Knife Edge, but got to say I'm not fond of both albums.

Love both, but Brain Salad Surgery more. Pompous, cheesy, pretentious, and overblown? Yes, and I enjoy every minute of it (well, maybe not "Benny the Bouncer".)

My two favourite ELP albums. Brain Salad Surgery is ELP's peak.

Well I like S/T a lot and can't stand BSS. So I'll go with S/T

Neither. The debut is a 2 star album, but BSS is a solid 3. I guess I'll go with BSS.

Debut for me. BSS is... (looking for the proper word) ...slightly overloaded?

I prefer Brain Salad Surgery, but debut is also very good. BBS is much more mature piece of work compared to self-titled one.

I rate the debut as a cracking album, a real taste of what was to come. However BSS is one of the greatest prog albums of them all, a real cornerstone of progressive rock, so this is easy.

I like the predominance of piano on the debut which changed quickly... but the message of Karn Evil 9 and that intro to Part 1 is also first class. Go with the debut .
(thought - would Love Beach sell more if they had the good sense to repackage it in a cover that was embarrassing in 1978.) It puts people off, It's like prog disco. There's the most offensive ELP moment.

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
