Topic: What's the worst line in a prog song? Posted: October 04 2010 at 04:12 |
So, what's the worst line in a prog song you can think of? I'll get it out of the way and say that "everyday a little sadder, a little madder, someone get me a ladder!" is pretty bad. Also I've also thought that the "Nothing hes got he really needs" in schizoid man was rushed.

The following are both from ELP's Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman on Love BeachYes it's great now you're a full time nurse but do be careful with the air-raids getting worse When I finally marched from Sandhurst I'd learned to put my fellow man first It gets worse, this is from Taste of My Love from the same album and could be a Spinal Tap song? I'm gonna love you like nobody ever loved you

Your assumption being that Love Beach is prog. It ain't.
But them's are some BAD lyrics by any means. It's like at 13 he wrote Lucky Man and he's been de-evolving ever since.

Worth keeping in mind that Peter Sinfield was at the lyrical helm for much of King Crimson/ELP's work. Not to say he's categorically bad (methinks Pirates is a good word paiting). But when he went bad, he really went bad.

They are not very good I admit, but there are extenuating circumstances. Because the band wanted to record the album and get out of there quick, Sinfield had to come up with lyrics very quickly. Even he knows they are not that good.

I love Spock's Beard's "Snow" but possible the worst line in a prog song that I can think of is in the otherwise great "I'm Dying".
Hear the shots in the night, And I don't care what for, I had mustard today, I can't eat it no more.
Seriously, am I missing some vague mustard reference?

"Tonight tonight tonight, we're gonna make it right" (Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by Genesis)
Musically, it is quite a nice song, I must say, but those horrible lyrics .

And the winner of the 'how many clichés can you get into one verse?' competition goes to...
"So if you want my address it's number one at the end of the bar Where I sit with the broken angels clutching at straws and nursing our scars. Blame it on me, blame it on me Sugar mice in the rain Your daddy took a raincheck"

"A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace/ and rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace." I realize that Yes always went for the sound more than the meaning, but that's just horrible sounding.

Any lyrics by Jon Anderson; it takes too much time to decide which are the worst in this huge pile of crap.
(Nevertheless he has played a key role in making some of the best prog albums).

So, was it you, or was it me? Was it x or z? Was it you or was it me? or was it x or z? Whodunnit?
Seriously bad.
