I know virtually everyone's gone off the UN these days because when push comes to shove they don't actually *do* anything but I find their resolutions particularly annoying.
Like, say they "resolve" to eliminate world hunger by 2015*. What arrogance, to think you can set a schedule for something like that let alone completely eradicate it. And of course, when the deadline passes and it hasn't happened... so what? Nothing. Nothing at all. People don't even care or feel guilty or whatever because it was some other country's fault or something unforeseen came up so nobody minds and it's quickly forgotten about. People become cynical and apathetic about the problems. Why don't you just fight hunger generally NOW rather than announce that at some point in the future it won't exist anymore so nobody has anything to worry about?
In fact I think these resolutions have a bad effect on laymen because they read that world hunger will be eliminated in 2015, sit back in their easy chair and relax, secure in the knowledge that they need take no action themselves because those guys in the government have got it all worked out.
*There is no such resolution, I'm just making a point. What I say can apply to any of these resolutions.
