mmmm... i agree that in this list the best bass player would be Levin, but in terms of basslines, Money stands out as one of the best in all rock and roll history, so Roger Waqters gets my vote. Besides I disagree with people thinking he is a bad bassist, he's not as good technically but he's got killer basslines that are incredibly fun to play, to jam and improvise with. I learned to play bass with many of his songs and many are still some of my favorite tunes to jam (Breathe, time, Young Lust, Echoes,

Absolutely. It would be nice to read the criteria that backs an opinion. Exactly how is Rog a bad bass player? I cannot answer that as I find his reticence and economy to be just what's required.

For that matter the criteria on how someone is good. Just to make reading posts more interesting than "I like this, I don't like that" which is what one can get from 2 year olds (if you have a one of those to vent opinion. I know, I've tested the Mother s of Invention out on one once. Ah well...)Confused What a surprise.

This is how spacey music is created, not by filling it up with lots of notes.

Money is such a great hook to play indeed. There's such a variety to bass, it's not as obvious as the top line instruemnts and singers but virtuoso bass means more than flash. One can so easily enjoy Geddy and Jaco and T Lev and Wetton, but then there's players such as Rog or Danny Thompson.

Or how about this idea. I often read how Squire's work on Tales could have been more in your face. I thought he did exactly as he thought was right. This material had to be rehearsed, written, recorded, re-rehearsed for performance and toured. I feel I can trust Chris Squire's musicianship enough to for him to present music as he sees fit. Same with Rog and Co. They're not unable or dim. They know what suits thier compositions and others. I find it a very unlikely idea that someone is going to go through months of playing and deciding to go on a sulk and not play what the public wants.

Fortuantely this is about bass players and the above does nto apply to Blackmore as was. Wink
