Try out Oceansize, Lunatic Soul, and Camel.

Lunatic Soul is Mariusz Duda's side project. It's alot more laid back, in the sense of Riverside's Ok.

He said that he likes Spock's Beard and Transatlantic, so clearly he is a fan of Neal's music. Replying to this question with "NO" really isn't contributing anything and certainly isn't helping the guy who who made the OP.

Now, a year later, I've blazed through Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, a little Opeth, Spock's Beard, Transtatlantic, some Beardfish, and perhaps my favorite, Riverside.

I now have some questions, and I would like to see what people think.

1. Are BlackField or No Man worth listening too? (Steven Wilson stuff)

Yes- Blackfield more so. But avoid the new one. Start with the first.

2. I've listened to (and loved) Blackwater park and Ghost Reveries, what Opeth album is good to go to next?

I say give Damnation a shot. Watershed also kicks major ass.

3. Are any of Neal Morse's christian prog albums any good, and, if so, which ones.

All. :)

4. I've been dying for some prog metal along the vein of Riverside or Tool, any other bands that fit the bill for that?

Check out Deadsoul Tribe is you really like Tool

and 5. Name any bands that you think really deserve a good listen.

I dunno, look at my last fm charts? LOL  (Devin Townsend will change your life)

Thanks :)

Hi Fyrus, if you enjoy Tool - there's an Australian band 'Karnivool' that are clearly influenced by the Tool sound. They have been tagged as alternative metal at times, but their albums 'Themata' and 'Sound Awake' are much closer to prog metal, especially 'Sound Awake'. Might be worth a look if you hadn't already heard of em

1. Are BlackField or No Man worth listening too? (Steven Wilson stuff)

Can’t really answer as I am not a big Wilson or Porcupine Tree Fan. However saw Blackfield once as support for Porcupine Tree and they were so much better than the main act.  Haven’t heard anything by No-Man

2. I've listened to (and loved) Blackwater park and Ghost Reveries, what Opeth album is good to go to next?

Still Life, Damnation and Watershed all are quite good

If you like Opeth you also should get Edge Of Sanity –Crismon. A masterpiece of progressive death metal!!!!

3. Are any of Neal Morse's christian prog albums any good, and, if so, which ones.

Questionmark and Life Line are my faves.

4. I've been dying for some prog metal along the vein of Riverside or Tool, any other bands that fit the bill for that?

Try out Psychotic Waltz, Sieges Even (start with the Art of Navigating by starts)and Kamelot

and 5. Name any bands that you think really deserve a good listen.

Phideaux, Rush, Arena, Marillion, Pallas, Pendragon, Carptree, Izz, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Van der Graaf Generator,    too many to mention!

Bet you would prob. like this
"Lunatic Soul by Riverside vocalist and bass guitarist Mariusz Duda , Its not heavy like RS but its an amasing albums.

Karnivol and Indukti might do it for you, both kind of related to the Tool sound.

The Mars Volta, IMHO is the most interesting prog metal project around, very wierd but those diamonds thrown in there here and there are wonderfull.

Well since the start of this thread I have checked out:

Neal Morse's stuff: One was damn brilliant. I'm atheist, but all the songs on their are great. Especially Spirit and the Flesh, chills everytime.

Lunatic Soul: didn't fill me up the way riverside does, and kinda felt like Damnation, as in, it's missing the element that makes the band good.

The Tangent: Just what  I was looking for - jazzy up beat free form songs.

Mars Volta: First album - masterpiece, second album - interesting electronic w**kery...

Symphony X - meh

Oceansize - only heard effloresce so far, which had moments of greatness but overall didn't seem that spectacular. Might check out other albums.

Flower Kings - yes

Ayreon - bombastic prog-rock-metal-opera is always fantastic. It's like Dream Theater, except it's actually good.

Haken - Aquarius is a perfect masterpiece

Karnivool - one of my favorites now, can't wait to see more from them

IQ - I liked frequency, but the production seemed subpar and the singer is... odd... is there a better album by them?

maudlin of the Well - definitely the proggiest band of them all, really good stuff. "I am a swan's wings, bloodied at the joint"

Still checking out more.

Looking into Dredg at the moment.

Keep the suggestions coming broskies.

To be honest, growling tech/extreme metal still kinda jars me, so I shy away from that part of them a bit :p

With some of the stuff you like maybe you could slowly but surely start delving into post-rock? Have you tried any?

Isis, Neurosis and Russian Circles I would call absolutely essential, if you decide to go that way.

For Isis, I would go with Panopticon, for Isis I would start with Through Silver in Blood.

I agree. My favs are Sola Scriptura and ?, but they're all good - at the very least. And the lyrics don't bother me in the slightest.

Quote Mars Volta: First album - masterpiece, second album - interesting electronic w**kery...

Not afraid to admit it: I love all the Mars Volta's albums, even Bedlam in Goliath.

Quote IQ - I liked frequency, but the production seemed subpar and the singer is... odd... is there a better album by them?

Ever. (Subterranea is a personal fav though.)

A little late to the party but....

1. Are BlackField or No Man worth listening too? I dont know

2. I've listened to (and loved) Blackwater park and Ghost Reveries, what Opeth album is good to go to next? Still Life or Deliverance

3. Are any of Neal Morse's christian prog albums any good, and, if so, which ones. YES!!! You've already heard One, but Sola Scriptura and Testimony 2 are the best. I also love Testimony and "?", Lifeline is average.

4. I've been dying for some prog metal along the vein of Riverside or Tool, any other bands that fit the bill for that? ---

and 5. Name any bands that you think really deserve a good listen. Brand X Wink
