I've recently discovered this excellent Bulgarian band which I think is definitely worth you taking a look at.  Lot Lorien have released 3 albums with AMAdea Records, two studio albums and a live album with the renowned Bulgarian musician and Kaval player Theodosii Spassov.

In their music one can detect a number of elements, the most dominant ones being folk and jazz.  This is perhaps a borderline case, but I think that although the tracks are relatively short their music contains enough progressive elements - frequent changes in tempo, improvisation, variations and departures from a simple song structure, accomplished musicianship - to merit being considered for inclusion.  What do you think?

Very interesting suggestion! I'm not sure either if they'd qualify as progressive folk-rock, but I'll leave that to the Prog folk team to decide, which I'm notifying right now. Thumbs Up

Ok, thanks!  I think it might be a long shot but they do display more progressive tendencies than most straightforward folk rock bands so I think they are worth suggesting Smile

No problem!  Big smile

I've written to AMAdea records to request permission to use the biographical data provided on Last.fm - I'm sure that they will approve.

The guys at AMAdea Records have granted me permission to use their biographical information, so here it is.  I'm adding a short paragraph to describe their releases to date.

BIOGRAPHY

The Lot Lorien music group is a Bulgarian world-fusion-progressive band that is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. The band came into existence in 1998 and has been continually developing a sound that has no equivalent in the world. The creators of the band, Kiril Georgiev and Zlatomir Valchev, were inspired by J.R. Tolkien's books and through his works came the name of the group.

Lot Lorien's compositions, both the original music and interpretations of some traditional songs, use elements from Bulgarian, Balkan and world folklore, combining them with progressive rock and jazz influences. By presenting traditional music in a contemporary format the band makes it more accessible to people from all around the world. The impressiveness of Lot Lorien's sound is further enhanced by the use of standard and non-standard instrumentation, such as acoustic guitar, bass, violin, female vocal, drums, keyboards and percussions (glockenspiel, tapan, djembe, darbouka...)

The band is a member of IOV (a UNESCO- affiliated International Folk Arts Organization) since 2003. Lot Lorien have performed at many concerts and festivals in Bulgaria and around the world at places such as Italy, the Russian Federation, Pakistan, Turkey, Poland, Slovenia, Finland, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Romania, South Korea, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia and Croatia.

To date, Lot Lorien have released 3 albums with AMAdea Records, two studio albums and a live album in collaboration with the internationally renowned Bulgarian folklore and jazz musician Theodosii Spassov.  Their first release is "Eastern Wind", followed by "Live in Ohrid (feat. Theodosii Spassov)" and then "Lot Lorien."  All three albums were released more or less at the same time, in September 2009.  More releases are expected in the near future.

band members:
Kiril Georgiev – guitars, mandola, pandore, baglama, lod, lyrics and compositions
Zlatomir Valchev – drums and percussions
Galina Koycheva – violin
Bora Petkova – vocal, percussions, kazoo, lyrics
Petar Pavlov – bass
Alexander Kinov – live and studio soundengineer, keyboards, technical maintenance
