There's not that many Riley fans here who have gone past In C and A Rainbow Curved in Air.

Maybe because not enough people know or recognise what you're talking about  even if they are interested in Terry Riley.  It might have helped if you'd offered more information in your opening post, and perhaps music samples.

Speaking for myself, and I checked this before:  I love music by Terry Riley and was very keen on his addition to PA.  Of his albums, I really like  A Rainbow In Curved Air, Persian Surgery Dervishes, Shri Camel and In C.

If you mean the track "Poppy Nogood And The Phantom Band" off of A Rainbow in Curved Air and the track "Happy Ending" off of the album Happy Ending, I don't know Happy Ending.

You've  vaguely expressed yourself, as you could be comparing the live album called Poppy Nogood... with the album Happy Ending.  I had to look up Riley to aid this post, by the way.

And I'm sure that quite a few, like me, will check threads even if they are unfamiliar with the topic -- that's one way I discover music.

I agree Terry Riley is a pivotal figure in modern music.
My favorite by "Riley is A Rainbow in Curved Air."  I still think it's ahead of its time.
I just discovered "Persian Surgery Dervishes," which is a similar style work I like.

As far as Tangerine Dream and other aspects of music like Soft Machine,
I don't think Terry Riley really originated the entire direction of these things
in particular, I think it was just becoming more dominant in the world and he was sensitive to it.  Others were coming up with similar styles around that time.  Eastern music was an influence of many even before Riley (see Alan Hovahness).  John Cage was doing minimalism, and there were many other composers
that were doing things that were similar to minimalism many years before, like Henry Cowell
and Harry Partch (who was much older than Riley, being born in 1901).  I think people like
Riley put a sonic element into these things that made them sound more like pop music.

I know you are not saying anything about the lack of value of the other music you quoted.  I do think Tangerine Dream put a lot of original ideas into their music and that just because some elements are similar to Riley, that people like Riley overshadow the importance of Tangerine Dream or Soft Machine.

Are you big fan of Terry Riley?  I'm a total newbie to his work; I just got "Rainbow In Curved Air" and I love it.  What other albums of his should I get next?
