Being a Hammond fan and amateur keyboard player, i'm looking for some inspiration
(good solos, long jamming ) It can be hard rock, blues rock, jazz-fusion (not a prog) Actually, I'm looking for something analogous to Hendrix or early Santana, but focused on keyboards, with long blues-inspired jamming and dueling b/w keys and other instrument ex: Atomic Rooster Booker T and the MGs Niacin Santana (with Greg Rolie on keys) Deep Purple Procol Harum Uriah Heep Black Widow Edited by awaken77 - July 12 2011 at 08:25 |

Jonas Hellborg Group: e - (Jens Johansson on Hammond sounding a million times better than he does in Stratovarious)
Frumpy - especially Frumpy 2 , German early 70's heavy rock.
Jan Hammer, e.g on John Abercrombie's albums Night and Timeless (jazz fusion), plus of a couple albums recently issued on CD recorded in the late 60's in Germany e.g. Maliny Maliny.
Larry Young on the first two Lifetime albums, Emergency! and Turn It Over (scene setting jazz rock albums).

My favorites from MMW are their albums with John Scofield on guitar (A Go Go, Out Louder). Killer hammond-based funk jazz blues rock with amazing solos from Scofield and John Medeski and arguably the best rhythm section in the genre today. Both albums are highly recommended. Out Louder is probably the more outside and wild album of the 2, while A Go Go is more straight ahead and chilled out.
And if you're into jazz, check out some Joey DeFrancesco. Brilliant. |

I was thinking Stevie Winwood although he is perhaps more 'pop' or 'soul' than rock. This is his best imo. Great little Hammond solo about 2.20 in.

Germanany's Night Sun with thier 1972 release Mournin' is proto-metal/hard rock/heavy psych/heavy prog. This album absolutely smokes:
Canadian rockers A Foot In Coldwater. Thier s/t debut and The Second Foot In Coldwater are recommended.
Fuzzy Duck and thier s/t debut:
Rare Bird with thier s/t debut and As Your Mind Flies by:
Dutch proggers, Trace:
Bodkin and thier haunting heavy Hammond from 1972:

Find some more of their stuff. John Medeski is the modern king of organ in my opinion. That son has a little more Electric Piano than some of their stuff so keep looking. I think the album Electric tonic applies most to what you said, though they're certainly much more of a jazzy jam band than those that you mentioned. And no vocals (thank god)

Oh and you could always look up Jimmy Smith since he should be given credit for basically making the organ what it is today.
While trying to just find SOMETHING to show you him I came across that...and damn is that video ripping. Definitely watch that
