Taking stock over the music purchases I made this past year (prog or otherwise) I've concluded that the albums I placed in my top 10 from 2011 aren't nearly as strong as those that were in my top 10 from 2010.  There were some disappointments from veteran acts and the new discoveries didn't thrill me as much. Anyone else feel this way with their year of music interaction?

Here's hoping 2012 rocks! Beer

2010 was the best year for music since I've been paying attention to music (which was around 05/06) IMO. So yes, compared to that 2011 was weaker. But still quite strong. Admittedly, no masterpieces (as of yet) this year but a few that get close and many that fall into the excellent/very good category.

This year was probably stronger overall than 09 too, but I'll admit it'd hard for me to remember what exactly was released in 09. Embarrassed

I always have difficulty determining which years are more successful.

For prog, i didn't add many titles from this year - but the ones i did add, i enjoy. 2011 was more of a "everything BUT prog additions" for me. Whether that's due to interest in other genres, or the weakness of prog titles... is unknown.

2010 has more albums I didn't hear until 2011.  If it sucked for you then you were listening to the wrong stuff.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Sure, no year would suck if I could somehow get my hands on only the right stuff, but that's how it is with exploring different artists. Even some things "highly recommended" didn't sound too good to my ears.

The whole year was much better than last year, the prog releases weren't quite as strong as 2009 but strong all the same. Every other kind of music was incredibly strong as shown by my RYM page.

Pretty much, for me, except maybe for jazz, which I find it to have had quite a brilliant season. But overall it put me in such a bad mood, with so many high-profile artists or even favourites I keep track off coming up with flops or underwhelming new material - there was particularly a great deal of lousy to meh sophomores - thus having to search into new music, out of which I didn't find too much original stuff or gems either.

I loved both years, was more involved in listening to new releases this year, though.

2011 needed more Kayo Dot and more Jean Louis

For me, 2010 was spent more on older albums. Actually, most of the first half was spent checking out anything I missed in 2009. I didn't check out much 2010 music IN that year, I got them in 2011.

2011 had more new releases I was interested in, and I got into more older albums as well. So 2011 was more "exciting" in the sense of getting a lot of newly released music. However, 2010 and 2011 were equally satisfying because Ive been getting into so much music in the last 2 years, and it's still going.

Maybe. I listened to more or less the same amount of albums each year (around 150) - the conclusion is that 2011 had overall more "good" albums, but unlike 2010, none I could describe as "excelent".

Bigger on the inside.

I think it has been an excellent year. I may have been hanging in the bounds financially - not being able to acquire anything, but lately I´ve been retaliating big time - and boy was I surprised by the amount of great music out there. You just need to look in the right places, that´s all really...
These are just a few that I really like:

There´s loads of wonderful music out there in the big wide world, personally I tend to prefer the ones you´ll find away from all the top lists though...

I really like the unharnessed way these guys roll on this release. Sounds like a weird hybrid of electro jazz with some spastic twitches thrown in for good measure.

I found this interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010s_in_music Looks like prog music's been acknowledged as a popular form of music for this decade, in terms of getting any attention.
