..but that illustrates an issue with ELP , they recorded several great tracks over their first 5 studio albums but none of those albums are masterpeices. (and after Works Volume One there was 'nothing'.)

I disagree, Trilogy and BSS are both masterpieces. |
both are close
Trilogy is the most consistent but The Sheriff and Living Sin are a little lacking
BSS is my favourite album and for 40 minutes is mostly brilliant but the last 5 minutes just isn't impressive enough for me like say the end of Tarkus is.Its my only real gripe although Benny The Bouncer is not exactly ELP's finest moment and neither is the dodgy injoke lyrics on Still You Turn Me On. |
Well I still must disagree. The Sheriiff and Living Sin are excellent tracks. As are Benny the B and Still...... I would say Tarkus is a masterpiece too but I won't. I don't feel like defending it. The end of BSS is aswesome btw.
Are you sure you are a fan? You aren't a fan in the way I am. I have noticed this many times before. I love ELP you just seem to like them a lot. |
Well I've bought Brain Salad Surgery in various formats more times than I can remember
I have all the deluxe editions
I bought all the recent remasters
I have all the box sets
I have the solo compilations
I've read Keith Emersons autobiography (I don't read books)
I've travelled to London to especially meet some ELP fans
I admit to being a fan quite readily and don't feel embarassed
BUT ELP WERE FLAWED!! They had many wonderfull highs but some rotten lows as well. They were not a normal band. They couldn't be Pink Floyd,Genesis etc They struggled to be consistent and probably didn't even care about such things.In this day and age it doesn't even matter.
The end of Karn Evil 9 is far from awesome to me but you are of course entitled to your opinion.
We could get into questions of what is a masterpeice. Trilogy is a nice collection of tracks but lacks real coherence to be a masterpeice. Karn Evil 9 is almost a masterpeice.
ELP's masterpeice's? IMO - Pirates,Trilogy (the track) and Tarkus (especially the live WBMFTTSTNE version). In general ELP have some great tracks and a decent legacy. It was never going to be a long term project.

^ Ok...you are a bigger fan. I seem to appreciate their music more than you though. For the life of me I can't see whats wrong with the end of Third Impression. A lot of things you say about ELP I disagree with. I forgot to add that Pictures is a masterpiece too.
Each to their own I suppose.

Overall, I believe "Pictures at an Exhibition" is my favourite ELP album... the closer to a masterpiece according to me.

apparently there are about 50 orchestral versions with Ravel's by far the most popular

just seems to lose momentum
I quite like the lyric ' their graves need no flowers, the tapes have recorded their names' (Sinfield?) . The first 5 minutes of 3rd Impression is utterly sublime but I'm looking for a killer ending (like Aquatarkus) and its just not quite there (imo). I said on the KE9 poll thread that I was pleased to see 3rd Impression getting a lot of love. I even voted for it myself which probably seems like a blatant contradiction to what I've just written!
With Pictures I just like most of the alternative versions ELP did. There is a fantastic version on one of the official bootleg releases recorded about 1974. They are on fire. Love the Lyceum version version as well. The actual album release is a bit too clean. I like a bit of dirt with the organ and cymbals nice and loud.

Well, I like the album, whether it was written by ELP or not. I also have heard Ravel's orchestrated version. I guess it would be interesting to hear the original piano version.

I am not the biggest fan of ELP, but I like to listen to them now and then. KC on the other hand I donīt ever feel like listening to.

Beat is a great album, haven't heard Thrak. So is Three of a Perfect Pair.
