The Talking Heads were more experimental and artistic in my opinion. They could create some wonderful compositions that were not only complex, but commercially acceptable. David Bryne is such a great songwriter and his stuff with Eno is also really good. They get my vote. Devo's all right, never really got into them though. A bit poppish for my liking. My friend's dad's band, back in the day (late 80's) actually opened for Devo. Pretty cool.

This.
I was told that Adrian Belew was supposed to replace Bryne later on in the band's career.
At the time, the internal relationships in Talking Heads were particularly strained. The band's rhythm section, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, covertly approached Belew with the suggestion that he should replace Byrne as the band's frontman - an offer which Belew politely turned down. - Wiki.

Another Devocentric thread from SmartPatrol . Love Devo's first Q&A album one of my favourites and then the second is ok too. But on the whole Talking Heads probably get the vote. But Are we not men gets best album.

Cool, I'd never heard that. I think Belew could have filled the role well, had he wanted to. It's to his credit that he declined, though. He had his own vision for his music.

Been a Talking Heads fan ever since I heard Remain In Light at the record store. Had a friend who also liked Devo, but they never really did it for me. Saw them on the Colber Repor not too long ago and they were OK, but I decided not to dig any deeper.

Listen to Fear of Music. Listen to any Devo album. Fear of Music is so far beyond not just the music of the era, but music of any era, prog or otherwise. Look, I love Whip It and Peek-A-Boo and Freedom of Choice as much as they next guy. But Fear of Music is in my all time top 10. I am still 30 years later just discovering the depth of that sucker. Find myself a city to live in.
Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

I'd agree, but you sure as hell can't judge Devo based on Whip It and Peek-A-Boo.
