Each band has thier own style, sound and creativity, and has put out numerous fantastic albums.

The Talking Heads were more experimental and artistic in my opinion. They could create some wonderful compositions that were not only complex, but commercially acceptable. David Bryne is such a great songwriter and his stuff with Eno is also really good. They get my vote. Devo's all right, never really got into them though. A bit poppish for my liking. My friend's dad's band, back in the day (late 80's) actually opened for Devo. Pretty cool. Thumbs Up

This.

I was told that Adrian Belew was supposed to replace Bryne later on in the band's career.
At the time, the internal relationships in Talking Heads were particularly strained. The band's rhythm section, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, covertly approached Belew with the suggestion that he should replace Byrne as the band's frontman - an offer which Belew politely turned down. - Wiki.

He couldn't fill Byrne's shoes?  Or at least his big suit?
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Another Devocentric thread from SmartPatrol LOL .  Love Devo's first Q&A album one of my favourites and then the second is ok too.  But on the whole Talking Heads probably get the vote.  But Are we not men gets best album.

Both good - Talking Heads just had more good songs, that's what it eventually boils down to for me.

Cool, I'd never heard that.  I think Belew could have filled the role well, had he wanted to.  It's to his credit that he declined, though.  He had his own vision for his music.

Heads by a long shot.

I mean, older Devo's is good, but they really lost it with their newest album.

Been a Talking Heads fan ever since I heard Remain In Light at the record store.  Had a friend who also liked Devo, but they never really did it for me.  Saw them on the Colber Repor not too long ago and they were OK, but I decided not to dig any deeper.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Devo are practically my homeboys.  Underrated and more than just a novelty act.

When I think about Talking Heads, I put this song in my mind:

Great Bass line
When I think of Devo, this song comes in my mind:

But, I haven't heard enough songs to anwser to your question.

Hmm; friend got me in to Devo last year; and I don't have any TH albums (though I generally like the songs I know).  Still, have to say Devo.

Listen to Fear of Music. Listen to any Devo album. Fear of Music is so far beyond not just the music of the era, but music of any era, prog or otherwise. Look, I love Whip It and Peek-A-Boo and Freedom of Choice as much as they next guy. But Fear of Music is in my all time top 10. I am still 30 years later just discovering the depth of that sucker. I'm surprised so many people said Talking Heads!
More experimental than Devo? No way.

They have a ton of great tracks, with even better lyrics.

I'd agree, but you sure as hell can't judge Devo based on Whip It and Peek-A-Boo.
